That is really interesting. Funny thing is Zinc has long been touted (and poo-pooed) as a treatment for colds and flu. I even remember back in the 80s or 90s you could get cold lozenges that specifically advertised a high Zinc content. |

I couldn't make this up if I Tried. Tuesday I went to our local French Town, to go to the Chemist/pharmacie for paracetamol for the boy and me as we still get bad headaches. I duly waited in the 2 person line at 2 meters apart. I was about to go in the shop when a Police car pulled up and beckoned me to them sat in their police car. Yes, I thought I have the correct paper work for visiting the Chemist. But No, the French police sergeant asked me/then ordered me to remove my Face mask. He said that I was sacring people, "what people" I remarked as the streets were empty. He then ordered me to remove my mask, and he said "Only paper towels are allowed". Both policemen had no masks on, I said "me and the boy have had the virus and are recovering and only come out once a week for food and medicines, if I remove this mask both of you are likely to catch it or you will be contaminated", silence ensued, then the Sergeant said, " I have my orders". I said No and walked away to my parked car. He then shouted, "If I see you again with that mask on, I will arrest you, I have my orders". Telling you! I couldn't make this up if tried. Just received a letter from my local MP, saying not to wear a mask in public because it scares people, but to keep a safe distance and to wash my hands regularly. So outside the ATM machine we are all lined up safely two metres apart, and we all step up in turn to push the exact same buttons and touch screen with our unprotected fingers. What a joke. Cheers, Tony. |

I have seen many asians in the city wearing masks at any time. I hardly think anyone is scared. To be brutally honest, Women wearing burka's are a lot more scary and sure as hell no one will complain about one of them. There is your solution Clockman, Put on a Burka and you'll be fine. If I go out in public, I'm going to be putting one of My Scarves I put over my face in winter when I ride my Harley on. No one has ever said there was anything wrong with that before and they won't want to now. I think it's nuts they dissuade people from wearing masks. The only reason I believe is if they encouraged it, they know the Chinese Bought them all up here in Jan and shipped them back to china so there would not be enough to go round. I think something over peoples faces is better than nothing no matter what they say and believe they are saying not to if you don't have the virus only to try and make what masks there are go around, not because it won't help. At least we are good for Sanitiser. Made up 5L of the stuff the other night. Got it so it dries a bit slow therefore giving it a longer residence time to kill any germs. Browbeat wife and daughter to use it frequently and meet them at the door with it when they come home. I got some deliverys from China which I open and give a good spray with glen 20 And treat as if they are infected. Might be pedantic, I don't care. For a spray of the stuff and a wash with metho, it's worth the peace of mind. I don't believe the virus could last that long on a surface but I can't find a straight answer to how long it could be active for and information is very conflicting so I'm not taking any chances. With my complications, I'm in the " Pretty certain to die" category if I catch it. |

Post your sanitiser recipe! I also have moderate complications, and so therefore am also at risk if I get this bastard of a thing, so I am taking lots of precautions myself etc. Back to the comedy: Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

@Davo99 pretty much agree with that. I have a small bucket of bleachy water made up all the time and I go round with a cloth and wipe the handles of everything and anywhere else that would have been touche, like light switches, sides of doors, fridge handles, cupboards. An anything that comes through the letterbox (also wiped daily) gets a wipe over too and if I am not gagging for it it goes into the conservatory to sit out there for a few days. I am on medication which knocks my immune system (Methotrexate) which also means if I get it I am in for a tough ride. You really cannot be too careful - a retired lady who had diabetes and kidney problems had been isolating for weeks even before this got bad and had the strictest hygiene because of her condition, but her daughter was on telly the other night (after her mum died of it) saying "somehow somewhere she picked it up" and they are all scratching their heads how... Really, don't take any chances - and @Clockmanfr, you keep right on wearing that suit. Ignore the idiot police... scaring the public for god's sake - they know exactly what and why you are doing it. If it helps, France doesn't a monopoly on idiot policing... (Silk hat = top hat) @Grogster. Congratulations on the first piece of CoRVID "Goastse" humour - please no-one of a delicate disposition google that! Edited 2020-04-03 17:09 by CaptainBoing |

My wife is in favour of wearing a mask but I prefer to keep my distance. Not that we can get masks anyway. The 'boss' is going to sew a few for us and when I did a few days of concrete cutting, I used one mask only instead of 3 or 4 for the job. That way, we do have a couple of industrial masks that I didn't use. I'm waiting for a call from the hospital to go for my lung function test. It was only 'semi-urgent' so it's not going to happen now. I have had the heart scans and know that I should be looking at a new valve at least but that's on the never-never plan now too. Doesn't really matter, the specialist looking after me is stuck overseas somewhere... Jim VK7JH MMedit  MMBasic Help |

Nothing to it. It's basically Alcohol and a moisturiser in all Sanitisers. The base is normally Ethanol but that's in short supply. Rang a mate who has been in the chemical/ cleaner game forever and he said I'd be rich If I could get it atm. Saw one of the supermarkets were advertising Metho which is ethanol with a denaturant ( Bitter flavourant so you can't drink it) and a touch of water. Mix that with some Aloe vera Gel. You can also use vegetable Glyc which is in a lot of commercial products. The additive is ONLY to stop your hands being dried out from repeated use. It's the alcohol that does all the work. The standard is supposed to be above 60% Alcohol in the final Mix. Metho is 97% Ethanol and if you add a bit of Glyc/ veg gum and even a few drops of essential oil to scent it, this walks it in. Adding a SMALL amount of water can slow down it drying on your hands. I went for 30 Sec to surpass the 20 Sec hand washing rule. The aloe vera we got took some time to dissolve but did eventually. Spose different products may vary but veg glyc will have no problem. The alovera makes the solution a little cloudy but veg glyc will come out water clear. You only need a SMALL amount of it. Some say 10% I'd say 5 is closer to the mark depending on how soft you want your hands to be afterwards. For an industrial type Sanitiser, I can't see why E-85 Fuel could not be used. To separate off the fuel you just have to put in some water and shake it up and the water and alc mix and the petrol goes to the top. Drain the water/ eth off the bottom with a drum with a tap in the bottom. I have done that Dozens of Times. I use the water meth mix in the Water injection System on the truck to Clean the engine and give the thing a 20 HP shot in the backside while still lowering EGT's. I use the fuel which is now Booze Free in mowers and the like. IF you added Minimal water to get separation and some scent and a bit of Moisturiser, It still should come in at the required alc level. Even if it Didn't, use plenty and do it twice and you are there. Stuff would be cheap as chips and in endless virtual supply. No problem going and getting 20L of it and having more than 15 base to use. If anyone was real Pedantic, Just crack it. Done that before too. Alcohol evaporates 20o Lower than petrol so one has plenty of margin to play with. Set up a basic still and hold the E85 at 55oC and you are there. The precipitate will be 99% ethanol or more if you use a reflux setup. DO NOT use Methanol! It is a poison and repeated use (and don't need many repeats!) will Cause SERIOUS problems starting with blindness. Got a few whiffs of that making Biodiesel and that's enough to give you headaches and Nausea. Ironically the treatment for Methanol Poisoning is.... Ethanol. IE, Have a good stiff Drink or 2! |

Yep. I have a Drum of Chlorine up the back I bought down. Bleach is merely Diluted and scented Chlorine. I forget the numbers now but Bleach is something like 12% Chlorine and pool Chlorine is something like 37%. In other words, you get a shipload more bleach in a drum of Chlorine from the pool shop than you do from the supermarket for the same price for the same amount of active ingredient. You can easily make your own Chlorine by electrolysis of salt water. I converted the Hydrogen making setup I had ( There was a bad and dangerous Idea) to make Chlorine. Couple of electrodes with layered plates welded on, powered it with solar panels on the shed roof, few days and it was done. It's exactly what salt water pool chlorinators do. 100L of the stuff was a bit over kill though but it made good weed killer. Maybe I should get some more salt and make and advertise it for sale now? Other thing I have always on hand is KOH. Used it for Bio making but it's the concentrated base for soap. Soap is KOH (or Naoh) blended with Fat or oil and scented. Nothing will survive that stuff in any decent concentration including the skin on your hands. Made up a solution of it once to clean the daughters new white sports shoes. They fell apart in Minutes. OOOPS! Maybe went a bit overboard on the KOH. When I was processing Veg oil to run the truck on, I used to do 1000 -2000L batches at a time. Didn't even worry about the inevitable spills on the concrete driveway. When I was finished,I packed the gear away and hosed the driveway down, Sprinkled it with the KOH Crystals, Broomed it over a few times and washed it off. Mrs only complaint was that the now Bright and clean Newly poured looking sections made the rest look ugly and dirty so I had to do my Filtering and drying in different sections so all the driveway was eventually cleaned. It always did look brand new. Works great on the sandstone pavers here. Give them a hit, they come up looking like new and all the weeds and grass in between die and won't come back for months. I have plenty of Disinfectants, If only there were some goggles I could put on that showed up where the Virus was, I could do a lot of good with it. |

Awesome photos there, Captain! @ Clockmanfr - How you doin' over there? Hope you are coming out the other end of the thing.... As a bit of neutral comparison of all the facts and things to do with this beast, I link you to this video here. This video is quite long, but it does make some excellent points. For now, I am happy to self-isolate/quarantine, but exactly how far do you think this is going on vs what the REAL threat of this virus is, I wonder? I can see the point being made by some, that the whole thing is intended to crash the global economy, so that they can form a new world order. I really HOPE I am as wrong on that as I have ever been, but power corrupts. And infinite power corrupts infinitely. SCARE the people, then move in and take over promising that everything will be fine. Gawd. Now I am being a conspiracy theorist!!! Sorry Gizmo..... Please someone, tell me I am paranoid. tinfoil hats on... I think things have changed a lot... never could "they" have envisaged such a connected world which keeps people informed - for good and bad. It will be harder for "them" to puul off a stunt now that we can scream about it in seconds, and if they pull the connectivity people will riot... they have a tiger by the tail. This is nothing new but perhaps this qualifies as "the right [time]": Even if you are paranoid, someone will take advantage of it... you have to stay red-pilled.
