Hi Vasi Thanks for the link I will try their suggestions as soon as I have some time to spare, but going through it quickly I have touched on most of it already. The problem I have I think is related to the Satellite modem as it sets the addresses for different computers through the router, but Win 7 then tries to set addresses from the computer and the two conflict, even though you tell the setup on connections to allow the modem to set addresses it still defaults back to setting itself. If I set up the network manually with addresses the modem tries to reset when switched on or after a drop out in signal, then the whole thing has a nervous breakdown including me. Then it tries to connect on the wireless network and that doesn't sync and it puts all other connections off line as well. The really annoying part is that my old laptop would lock on and sync on cable and wireless seamlessly when ever it was turned on and would sync with all the other computers on the network. This is really and advancement for windows, (not)of maybe a ploy to get us to upgrade all to windows 7, it really has made me hate Windows and my wife is now in in a war with her supplier to provide a computer that will work when switched on. For the moment my new laptop is back in it's box waiting for a new hard drive to see if that will help, but the supplier tells me it may not because of bios settings built in that are not allowing it to install XP. To complex for an old bugger like me. How do you like my new Microsoft Poster.

Hi Bob, I like the poster  . Is there no way to set Win7 only as a workstation regarding to Net? I guess not since you tried everything...
I have an idea: I don't know how Win7 can have access at a Router configuration but I guess It access the 192.168.0.1 setup page of the router? If that is the case, then use a third party firewall to block that IP on Win7 computer (or password the access on the router?). Maybe this way, the Win7 will not change the IPs of other computers... If you have an ON/OFF switch for the wireless module on the laptop, switch it OFF - also you can try to disable it from the BIOS. Hi Bob; I didn't see any reference to the master browser in your post? I found out a while back that Win.7 can not be the master operating system when older systems are in the mix. You need to have Vista or XP as Master and Win.7 as Slave. 7 will only work with another 7. This may be of some help. Beware of what 'looks' a simple solution. XP is rapidly approaching its 'use-by' date which means that it won't be officially supported (no security updates), other software won't install, browsers won't recognize most websites, and all manner of evil issues will arise. I also hate Windoze 7 with a vengeance however the alliances between Microsoft & the rest of the software world are sufficient to make things extremely difficult for those who attempt to buck their cosy little planned obsolescence model. My favourite was Windoze 2000 however its long gone the way of the dinosaurs. By far the best move is to get over the linux phobia, sure it used to be horrendously user-hostile but that was yonks ago. These days its far easier to install one of the countless variants ('distributions' for uber-geeks) than Windoze, most hardware is supported (usually better than Windoze in fact) & nobody keeps hammering on ones door looking for money for ever more crappy operating systems. When its all said and done, computer hardware is cheaper than chips ... keep a Windoze machine for the odd application that doesn't have an open source alternative although there aren't many these days. Microcrap Office isn't available for linux but thats a good thing, the alternatives are vastly superior anyway. |
