Gerbil Harvey is a pathetic greedy whinger that needs his arse Kicked. The greedy old mongeral is 78 years old and is worth over 1.5 Billion. Like he really needs the money right? e'd have to be a greedy self centered mongeral to have that much money and be worried about making more. At his age he should be enjoying what he has not trying to make the average person pay more. The hypocracy of talking about making it fair for Australian retailers when the stores renting space from him are far and away the most expensive retailer out there. They could add 25% tax to every other retailer out there and he'd still be a rip off. I'd like to say I will boycott his stores but for that to even be meaningful, I'd have to go in there first as as I NEVER bother, I can't. From Gerbils POV, I don't think it's about the tax at all, I think it's about fear mongering and adding complication to try and drive the less savvy away from online shopping. It's doubly hypocritical to whine about OS retailers when they hardly effect him. No one buys a fridge, stove, carpet, furniture or 90% of the other things Gerbill sells. It's only some of the small electronics they could affect his franchisees because that's all they are. I think what he wants to do is add complication to the online OS buying process to scare both buyers and retailers off. I wonder how long this will actually last? Seems to me to be like the Tax on Biodiesel that the oil company's whinged about 10-12 years ago when alternative fuel was all the rage. A bloke on a forum went to pay said tax and No one in the tax office knew about it. they looked it up and found it but then couldn't take his money because there was no way to allocate the money on the tax depts side. They knew damn well there was only a hand full of nutters doing it and just setting everything up would cost a fortune and yeild no return on the investment at all. The other stupidity of this is when I can get something for $12 online and the local retailers want $84 Like something I was looking for recently, The $1.20 Tax does not make the slightest bit of difference or influence me to use local retails at all. I feel for and understand some local retailers. Jaycar for instance imports the majority of it's stuff from china but the markup over online is huge. It has to be. they are paying rents, ware housing, wages, taxes and the list goes on. Unfortunately, that's just the way of the world now. You can whinge of they close down there will be lost jobs but it may also create new jobs in more people buying online and freight and post companies having to put more people on to keep up with the proportional increase. Same as people whining about buying Online killing jobs here. You know how many people courier companies and Oz post have put on in the last 5 years and how many indirect jobs have been created as well? Jobs don't tend to disappear with things like this, they simply change. I hope this backfires Big time on Gerbil, he more than deserves it for being such a hypocrite. I saw on the box the other night flogging shares in race horses say " He thought every Australian should own a share in a race horse. Yeah, I'm sure the old bastard does so he can dip his finger in that pie as well. Hopefully it does better than his Dairy operation which went down the tubes. I'd really want to invest in race horses this whinger was selling. I'm sure that would be a fantastic investment. Maybe next thing the old coot will be asking the gubbermint to bring in is $100K bank notes so there will be enough room in his coffin so he can take it all with him. |

Here in NZ, the Government are also toying with the same idea. At the moment, you can import up to NZ$400 worth of goods and NOT pay any import duty(GST) on it. Once the declared value of the goods exceeds that amount, 15% is applied. ....and Customs fees, and clearance fees and broker's fees...... Thousands of people buy stuff on-line, cos it is cheaper then the local shops, who have to charge more to remain in business, and a good chunk of why that is, is all the Government taxes applied to the local retailers. So, the Government's solution to people NOT buying local produce cos of the taxes, is to tax the people who choose to not buy locally for that very reason. They completely miss the point. If they weren't QUITE so greedy with the taxes in the first place in order to line their own pockets, many locals WOULD buy from the local supplier. At the same time, it is just about impossible to compete with the plethora of cheap stuff flowing out of China in EVERY are from Electronics to clothing. An example that directly affects me, is PCB manufacture. Here in NZ there are a couple of professional PCB houses, but the prices are TEN TIMES the cost of what PCB's now cost in China. I would much prefer to support the NZ business, but you can't fight basic economics, and if the PCB out of China is just as good but ten times cheaper...... Well, you do the math. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

/rant warning !! The funny thing is, China is just doing the same industrial revolution/mass production/economy of scale that the US did last century with Ford etc. Only this time the numbers are much bigger and there is a one-generation economic boost by the population strategy; the economy of scale now overrides shipping costs to anywhere else, the geography is redundant. I am wondering how the US tax system worked out. I think there is a "state" tax for some states as well as a Federal tax, that is largely intended for the same effect (?). If I sell something to a States' buyer, do I have to collect such state taxes ? I can see a vortex of taxes and red tape swallowing up any enterprise at all. On the hand, if the US doesn't restrict the flow of its technology somehow there is no on-going advantage from it. Eg Google etc, develops Angular and so on, it is adopted by India/Pakistan/Bangladesh software houses - who then profit by it and bypass the existing installed tech, so the local economy tanks. Then we have a fear-and-uncertainty election so the same conservatives get back in and the cycle starts over. /end of rant |

Just spotted my first instance of the same thing. $4.07 for a USB lead with a base & the separate PayPal transaction for 41c. Not sure haw to process the transaction. In the past, I'd put them thru the books as GST free purchases if they were for the business. That would land the total in G11 & G14 on the BAS. Can't put them thru as a normal purchase, as I don't have an Tax Invoice for $4.48. Just a PayPal receipt for $4.07 from Li Ling Jun, with not an ABN in sight. Even the 41c charged by ebay makes no reference to an ABN. |

Hmmm, Looks like the Tax Invoice thing kicks in now at $82.50 according to this... https://www.ato.gov.au/Business/GST/Claiming-GST-credits/When-you-can-claim-a-GST-credit/#WhenYouNeedATaxInvoice Still doesn't help much when the system expects one single document with a GST component & a single payment for processing.
