this is nigel morris's opinion on how renewable energy is actively discouraged, I dont agree with all that he has written but he makes a couple of sobering points on how businesses are charged for electricity. how the electricity industry is blocking solar in australia Part 1 how the electricity industry is blocking solar in australia Part 2 I'm confused, no wait... maybe I'm not... |

As many colourful opinions of the state of the power industry as the power industry have of RE. Perhaps if the power industry had handled the construction of large scale RE, rather than private concerns handling it, which was paid for by the power industry via consumers, there would not be the division there is. Tis a world wide problem with the consumer being the ones who will eventually foot the bill. An official QLD Govt document I glanced through the other day shows the govt pays out millions each year to Ergon alone just to keep power to remote communities. Than on the other hand Ergon pays the Govt as its shareholder up to the same amount in dividends each year. If you can sort out fact from fiction in the mess, you`d be the Lone Ranger but certainly not Nigel. Can see in our sunny country consumers going off-grid solar in masses in the near future, there are rumblings out there. Note one of the Hackaday Projects( re Gizmo`s recent post.) was from a Frenchman who designed his own battery powered solar monitoring but still conx to grid for the months they have no sun, all auto when the batteries drop to a set level, the grid cuts in. His move into solar had to do with the coming costly renewal of the aged nuclear power plants that supply 80% of France. There is no way our utilities would allow this in OZ. Yes, I think it will happen but not any time real soon. IMO it requires a significant change of lifestyle for it to work unless you have a lot of real-estate to accommodate the panels and storage. I think that if every household had to run off only what it produced, there would be a hell of a lot less power being used. Perhaps that is the solution to our RET dilemma? David M. |

Gotta agree, if households run off what they produce it`d be a solution to the domestic RET dilemma. From memory you consume about 1/2 what I use in our respective off-grid systems. But I consume only 1/4 what the average household does, and I don`t really want for anything further in that respect. For households we know RE, in particular solar+batteries, can do the job, but for industrial, mining, manufacturing etc no way, although hydro does have some credentials there. But is hydro accepted as RE? RE is, as yet not capable of supplying the power to build itself even, I`d like to be around when that statement is proven false. We come from the land downunder. Vic |

Hi All For the average household it is possible to be RE livable, for industry it needs to be a user pays system encouraging them to go as far as practical with RE and then Augmenting their uses with their own stand alone power such as gas or dependent on the system, with the huge roofs of factories and sheds around industry and commercial business it is conceivable that if this area was utilized it would provide a large percentage of daylight power requirements, power companies have heaps of off peak power surplices so the night power could be supplied easily. We must remember that we are dealing with money making corporations government included and they are not going to phase themselves out of commercial existence just to placate the RE requirements. I suggested that they pay us 15 cents a KWH during the day as they charge 30 cents for it to consumers, that's a 100% profit for no added infrastructure and they nearly wet themselves laughing at that suggestion. That's what we are up against. All the best Bob Foolin Around |
