I try to make this one:

Desulphator information and circuit 12 and 24 volt.

http://www.thebackshed.com/forum/uploads/VK4AYQ/2015-03-11_142512_desulfator.pdf

JayCar had some components.
Not all parts were available and got couple substitutes too, hope close enough:

Ferrite Choke 220 UH 5A (6A max not available)

C1 instead of 30 uF 16V got 33 uF 16V

C2 instead of 0.22 uF got 33,000 pF 50V - is it close enough?

Checked on the net if missing components are on hand in another JayCar store or it will have to be eBay

Mosfet IRF9Z34 is not available, (closest one at JayCar is IRF540N CAT NO ZT2466 so not good)

Fast recovery diode D1 GI826CT closest can have 6A but 1000V - higher voltage will be probably OK

1000uH choke is a problem too
I can get:
JayCar has 470 uH Prewound Ferrite Choke CAT.NO LF1278
or High Frequency Choke - 470uH, 0.855ohms, 0.52A

Just in case I will place reminder myself here, for reference when I will have all components to build Desulphator:

RS Components has your FET $4-95. There is no such thing as a 30uF capacitor. Well, you could have one custom made :-) But it's just a de-coupling cap. Electro' caps typically have a tolerance of about 20% 33uF will be fine. In fact you could use anything above that value (within reason, 220uf, 470uf) all will work fine. The article you link at the beginning shows an error in the value of C2. .0022uF is the same as 2.2nF which is also the same as 2200pF (Yep, just move the dot) Might want to get that one close as it's part of the timing cycle. Also check RS Components for the choke. 1000uH is the same as 1mH. Soanarplus is also a good components supplier. I use both and are both well worth a look.
Good luck!

wow, never quite get over RS prices.
try element 14, 54c for a d2 pack version of that fet(surface mount, but easy to solder), or $1.04 for a TO-220.

You could try winding the inductor manually if you get desperate.

Thanks a lot for helping posts.

(Unfortunately I did not build anything from scratch yet, my experience is replacement of failed components only, but never too late for new experiences.)

Forgot to mention that C2 is 0.0022uF

and checked, JayCar has them, not sure why I was given 3300pF instead of 2200 (?)
(in post above I wrote by mistake 33,000pF , sorry , cannot change it now)

Crossed my mind to wind up inductor, after seeing various sizes cores at JayCar.
But if 470uH will be good enough, might go this way.

Hi George

The 470 will work OK just a bit down in power, what you could do is wind some extra turns on 470 to get the inductance up a bit, all good fun. I think someone suggested two in series, but you would have to watch the phasing or one could cancel out the other. A few meters of extra wire wound on may be the easiest.

This is the one I am going to use

Thanks Bob for reply.
Looks that there is hardly any room for couple of metres of fairly thick wire to wind into this one.

How should I do it?

The way I would do it:
1. measure wire thickness
2. get say 2 metres of coated wire
3. scrape off bit of insulation and solder new wire with one of the ends
4. paint or somehow insulate the soldered section

5. wind up in the same direction going around the core
\ Job done Right?

Bob,
Are we talking about part L2 1000uH 100mA ?

Georgen

20pcs Inductor 1000uH Choke Approximately AU $6.54

Jacar Cat No…LF1267…220uF 6amp Ferrite Choke……$4.95

What fast diode did you get?

PS I used 2 by 470 uH Jacar chokes in series in my first units and 1 of the above in the other. Audio output is very similar.

Would :

FR607 6A 1000V Fast Recovery Diode

Be any good for my project?

Or have to get 100V one

Hi George

The 1000 volt one would be the way to, the 100 volt could be a bit low.

Bob,
much appreciate your help.

I am bit lost and tell the truth, have some jitters should I try to make desulphator and in a process bother Forum members who could spend time doing something real.

I didn't realise how complicated can be simple gathering of components.
schematic diagram tells one thing and shops have some of them, then Internet shops are prohibitive due to shipping costs with exception to Deal-Extreme and E-Bay that many items can be delivered free or for couple of dollars.

I would not mind to pay delivery even $10, providing I can order the lot.
Making several orders with paid delivery $12 for each delivery, could buy desulphator for $50 or $60 and still be ahead.

Swapped today ceramic capacitor 3300pF for correct one 2200pF and returned toroid, will probably get suggested 10 from E-Bay

Sorry for ranting too much. :)

Forum members making desulphators are spending time doing something real.

If you are lost "Post" and you will be found.

We are all waiting to be "bothered"

Thank you very much for kind words.
Could not spend any time on my little project.

Have to order several items.
I also have to make updated list of what I've got so far too.

It is tempting to get 5 FR607 6A 1000V Fast Recovery Diodes, but because I only need one, it makes no sense.
Pity, price difference is insulting to just get one of them

Are those diodes often used in projects?
This way I can build on my spare components.

Most of what I have now are recovered components from thrown out items.

Hi George

This is a critical component to make the thing work, if you like to send me you address I will post you one when my order arrives.

All the best

Bob,
Much appreciate your kindness.

Have them ordered, so Fast Recovery Diode is one less item to worry about.

The way our Australian Post operates, you would probably pay more to send one to me, than you paid for the lot.

I might be wrong, but these 1000V 6A diodes can be used for solar panels up to 100W or so, to prevent them from being accidentally connected in reverse.

Quite a few things can have them as insurance, so plenty use for spares.

Have to go back through information, to order those thoroids and I will probably be close to have all the items required.
