Hi Don.

This is slighly off-topic, but are you planning to produce a colour maximite along the lines of the B/W one you made - the SM1?

I had a quick look on your site, but unless I am missing something...Edited by Grogster 2013-01-11

Hi Graeme,

I was hoping we could have got something going along these lines, but what I had planned has fallen through, so there won't be a unit forthcoming in the immediate future.

Mind you, the DuinoMite boards have been designed so that the RGB signals can be easily isolated to allow for minor modifications to the VGA circuit in order to produce colour. This applies to the mini, mega, and eMEGA. Also, the eMEGA has no shared signals, and has 40 I/Os, similar to the Colour MaxiMite.

I made Geoff aware of this information, but I don't think he is going ahead with any software at this stage.

what about using this then, a colour TFT display with inbuilt PIC32. A motherboard could bring out the connections, interfacing to ports and whatever is required. I would imagine that BASIC could easily be adapted to this board also to have a self contained colour unit

Yeah, another person I know in business was going to use one of those exact boards, but writing their own PIC32 code to drive it all.

It may well have possibilities as a MM clone thing with built in screen, but I have my doubts(without reading the datasheet) that this module generates VGA in the same way.

If, however, it generates it's LCD display with serial commands(perhaps it has it's own LCD driver IC, and you talk to the screen with easy commands in the code), then a MM clone code could perhaps operate on it, and send the LCD those commands - really need to read the datasheet, which I might download just to remind myself what hardware is really in it...

EDIT: Had a look at the schematic. Not easy to make this a MM clone without some serious hardware hacking. Probably not worth the effort, IMHO.Edited by Grogster 2013-01-13

If it uses only the PIC32MX460F512L, then it will not suit MMBasic.

I am interested in getting a couple of the original MM boards for a bit of prototyping. Question: does the board take the pic32 795 and (other than the PIC)are the components SMT or through hole?

I have done the artwork for a blank pic32 795 and 4x25 headers but not yet tried to etch. Thought I'd try on a "proper" PCB first.

Does anyone know of 100 pin pic32 proto boards?

Futurelec sell 100-pin TQFP breakout boards.

http://www.futurlec.com.au/SMD_Adapters.jsp

Scroll down to about half way - you should see them there, code 100PINTQFP, $1.50 each.

EDIT: Make that right at the bottom of the page, 2nd last one...Edited by Grogster 2013-01-14

Hi Grogster (love that handle)

Thanks for the info - I've oredered 10 of them. At 1.50 each, really can't go wrong.

I still intend to get a couple of the MM mono boards as stand alone controllers. Don't really need colour for that.

You are welcome.

On the Grogster name(and as someone else also complimented me on it), it has to be said, and would not be a lie to state that this name was "Given" to me as a nickname when I was at high-school, as I was known to "Drink a little bit" at parties.

I still drink, but just beer now - not the Vodka or Rum that I used to drink then.

To be legally Grog, it would have to have been rum (actually rum and water). Had more than my share of it when serving with the RN thiry odd years ago.

Do I drink much these days??? Naaaah, shpill mosht of it!!

Yeah, that's kinda why I gave it up - spirits.

I loved drinkin' them then, but that was then, and this is now.

Frankly, spirits don't agree with me now. Even in small doses, I feel really crook the next day.

So, a few beers is what I have limited it to these daze.

...but I digress.

Sorry Don!

I see that there are various "mites".

I have seen the schematic for a maximite and know what it comprises.

I have made my own Arduino 328 starting with a pic programmer (an evolution project), so I know what an Arduino is.

What is a DuinoMite? Is it just a specific hardware layout? From what I can see, it differs little from a MaxiMite.

Are there advantages of one over the other as it seems they can both be programmed with one another's firmware and have essentially the same hardware.

David, DuinoMite is a little different.

Geoff Graham has written routines to make the mini, mega, and standard run as a compatible 15 pin I/O Maximite, as opposed to a standard 20 pin Maximite.

This makes the big difference the price, which starts at around $25 A&T.
Various boards offer different options, such as Arduino, and battery backup. You really need to read the specs to get a grasp of the full features.

Thanks Don, I guess I've got a lot of reading to do and adding to my already full bookshelf of datasheets etc. Hope I live long enough to scratch the surface of my collection.

google will find the various DM (DuinoMite) boards. Some have interesting features like wide power supply voltages and industrial components.
