Hi All,

Well the totally new axial is up and flying , which I have called it the AX320-1MF which is a bit of a mouth full but after all the work that has gone into this one I reckon it deserved it, you can write in what you want on the MF but if you read the blogg it will become apparrent.

The full story of the build is on the Blogg CLICK HERE , it keeps it all togerther and keeps from getting diluted over a trivial off-topic reason, so if any one wants to comment or whatever then they can do so here.

Below are a few pictures of putting it on to the tower and I will keep the blogg updated with any more info like outputs etc..

So far it is looking like an all-round powerfull mill with a 3.6m , ALU GOE 222, in the light wind @ 2~3m/s 7~9klm it getting 50 ~ 70W and I have had a couple of medium puffs of 19-23klm and its quickly pushed out 950W @ 220RPM.

Shows inside the cowl with the cooling air flow fin.

All assembled and ready .

Me too , but got in to it through the blog page ok , nice looking mill .

Whats the idea behind the bend in the tail , trying to make it track straighter into the wind ??

Thanks, Pete, Tas & Glenn,

Yea Tas , Tail offset is overlooked a lot of the time because maybe poeple think like it's a plane or something , the tail is kicked 15 to 20deg so as to balance the blade off-set force in light to medium wind which trys to keep the blades as square to the wind as possible until furl moment.

Bit more of an update on the output , 25klm 1188W @ 233rpm so looking good so far

I still think the nose cone should be pink with a cherry on top ... errr tip.

In that case i wonder what the mold was casted from? Edited by Downwind 2012-12-30

Hi Phill,

I have a small fibreglassing business that among other things makes covers for windmills.

It intrigues me how you get the finished nose cone off the mould with all the retro curves.

I have a modified OEM mill (500watt) and have often thought of doing a nose cone for it but couldn't justify making a mould for a "one-off" job.

Hi David,

The whole cowl assy is made up of 3 sections and the nose cone is held on by a piece of 1/4unc all thread that screws into the bearing cap, the blog shows a bit more detail.

Pete will have a nose cone one day to soon to play with ,as I have always thought similar thoughts, the 500w looks just plain ugly with out and it would just finish it of , and salad bowl nose cones just don't do it for me.

Pete....If it was moulded from that, I dont think I would be playing with windmills

Had a bit of wind to test with today nothing to strong but a couple of good blows , below is screen dump of the logging screen, the output and logged data for today which maxed @ 1995W @ 270rpm in 34km , but the best thing is the stator temp never went over 46deg and pulled back soon after where the old Ax would have been pushing 90~100+.

The 100W difference in the watt/hrs is because I had the log save off while I was playing with different Capacitor/doubler combinations and with an AC coupled Boost module to see how much extra load can be put on the blades , that is the scatter of red dots above tha main line .

The green and yellow that can be seen are the 2 grid inverters and the blue , red and white the house power.

Mate! you need a bigger screen im sure you can fit some more on it, than how many eyes do you have, i get dizzy with the picture.

All the same excellent results thus far, and i cant wait for a big blow to come through to see what it makes, thats if Brians mate the leprechaun dont hex you before hand.

Quote  Anyway heard from Shaun and he promised to put the leprechauns onto Phill's turbine as he said man you Ozzies are making me jealous so I gotta so something done and Murphy is a hard guy to deal with.........

Do garlic keep leprechaun's away? well bugger it, sprinkle garlic around the mill just in case it works.

geez Phill you make it all look too easy.

Having been fortunate enough to own one of your hand built mills ( for others the dual stator 3m aly bladed beast that unfortunately hit the ground when the tower broke)

I can see its a masterpiece of engineering and a tribute to your skills.

2000W at 9.5m/s and such a low temp rise ......i'd be tempted to throw a 4m blade set on it but we know all too well what happens when we get greedy.....

Does make you wonder how the chinese can made a decent mill 5kW for a couple of grand and i guess the answer is they really cant.

Hey Karl,

Yep , this AX has me excited after a few years of mother nature laughing at me and saying " put it up again and I will destroy it"

Finally I am getting some good output with no heating , today in another crappy wind day I have seen 1000+ W/hrs which is almost the norm now, and a peak of 2025W @ 275RPM in 38KLM with the stator hitting 46degC and within 15min pulling back to 36~38 which is a couple of deg over ambient at the time.

So all things are pointing to 3kW @ under 350RPM , but would think I will be starting to see some temp rise at those levels ... Time will tell.

This is inspiring me to move a lot quicker and pull my finger out for the AX400 which has been to long in the making, but in saying that it's probably a good thing.

Phill

Your mills just keep getting better and better.
I agree with Karl, you make it look easy.
Keeping her cooler may be just what the Doctor (Phill) ordered.
Looking forward to see how she flys.
Awesome job, very nice indeed.
May the wind Gods be with you.

Hi Phill

Sorry for the delayed responce.
Hey you remember me, thanks.
I have been busy trying to make a living amongst other things but all is well.
Saying good bye to winter. Hope you don't mind if I send winter down to you guys.

My future plans includes moving South about 550 miles (885 km). I bought a place close to a lake/river system and the weather is much better. I will be travel there again this July. I will post videos of my new place in the hopes getting comments from the forum members about installing a mill. The house sits on top of a bluff or a ridge if you will. The winds are something you would have to experiance in person. Looking South the drop off or grade elevation drops about 150 feet (45.7 meters).
It's going to take awhile to get down there but I figured I may want ot start now to either up grade my existing mill or do something different.

Your new build is awesome. With the new cooling and the MOST important manual tail furl looks like your ready to FLY again.
Question' what the possaibilty of shipping the Geo blades longer than 4 feet (1.21 meters) here to the states?

Hi Fillm,

The AX is one beautifully built MF! Nice Work and very impressive results.

I hope you have a substantial, guyed tower, with the windswept area that she has.

Keep us posted on performance, are you off grid (battery bank) or grid tied there?
I would imagine that you could harvest enough energy to keep you in the green.
Are you thinking about or using solar as well?

Once again, Great Work!
