Get armed with a carton of VB and cruise into the local electric line yard... After you have told the storeman your story ,and pointed out that your boots are steel capped, betcha he gives you heaps of odd lengths of stay wire .. It's a bit hard to terminate ,,but I'll tell ya how to do that lata.... It worked for me.. Bruce Bushboy |

Sling Rig at the corner of Kewdale Road and Orrorong Road is best - as advised by jobblow. Taxation as a means of achieving prosperity is like a man standing inside a bucket trying to lift himself up. Winston Churchill |

Hi Darcy What I use is HT fencing wire bundled into six strand then spiral wound with a anchor point and a electric drill, or if you are young and fit a crank with a hook on the end. it is strong and a big roll of wire will make enough for a couple of mills. Allow 15 % extra length when you wind the loop over the length you want. Normal wire is a lot easier to use as it is softer and easier to handle, a six pack is good for 4 tonnes as compared to 6 tonnes for the high tensile. Cost about $60 dollars for a roll two boxes of beer. All the best Bob Foolin Around |

How much do you need I have a roll of wire as used by Western Power 3 strand high tensile, I am not looking forward to breaking into the roll as the drum has collapsed somewhat, but I seriously doubt I will ever use all of it.. Hi, There is no official ScrewFix in Australia, but I have been used these guys recently and they are very much on the same lines as ScrewFix. Trade Warehouse Direct - http://www.tradewarehouse.com.au I ordered from them last week and the screws, wire mesh and flyscreen which I purchased arrived the next day. They are based in Perth and so am I, but it was still excellent service. If you are not in Perth, they deliver throughout Australia for a fixed fee of $9.95 and if you order over $99 delivery is free. Check them out on their website. By the way although they do sell wire, they don't sell the size gauge you need. I understand that they are increasing their range all the time and they will try and get items in on special order if you let them know what you want. I guess they can't say fairer than that! This sounds brilliant. What did you do to splice the ends, or join them or stop them unraveling? |

Hi Snowghost In the anchored end I wrap them around a thimble thats used for wire rope, then when you Finnish winding use a block of wood with a hole drilled in it and then split along the hole, clamp to the wire and wind it tight onto the thimble, then wrap with tie wire close to the thimble and it makes a professional looking job. you can do the same on the other end if you know the exact length you need, I found with the wire I was using it needed to be about 5 % longer to start with, you will have to over wind it as it does spring back a few turns when released. If you don,t want to make a fixed length bit the other end can be finished by wrapping around a thimble then using a piece of 1/2 x 3/8 steel bar 18 inches long with a hole drilled in a bit from one end needs to be a sliding fit on the wire, put some grease on the wire and wrap the end of the wire around it for 10 or 12 turns, repeat the tie wire trick and is all done. My friend who showed me used to solder the splice wrap then boil for a few minutes to get the acid off the wire and stress relieve the joint. You can use low tensile wire also and it is a lot easier to work with but for the same gauge wire you need more strands for the same strength. I used 4 strands HT and six for LT, I tested it with the tractor and couldn't break it. All the best Bob Foolin Around |

hi Bob i like that, sounds like a cheap solution for us $$$ strapped windmiller's out there as it cost lots of $$ to buy new gear to get our gennies flying.another way to save $$ is go to the power companies and get the cable that they use to go from the pole to your house,3 phrase 4 core is the best but 2 core single phrase will do.dumps are good places for gav pipe and deep cycle batties or scrap metal yards are keen to sell for cash $$ as well Pt Wakefield Matt |

Hi crew ,, I use the electric linesman guy wire for holding side and end poles vertival. It's seven strand several gauges,(u want the light stuff),, you'll get it from linesman depots if youe are friendly and have a carton of vb in the back of the ute ,lol. You place the thimble or eye from the stay rod in a vice , thresd though ,say 400mm or so of wire ,unravel the seven strands(they all have seven strands). Kink the first strand at 90* and start tightly winding around the other 6 starands ,,,it will spring back half a strand , nick this strand by holding with strong pliers with a edge of a file halfway through and gently twist off, ..1st one don . now do the other6 and you have a professional finish , paint with cold gal .. Sorry, after 10 times of trying ,, I can't post the details of my terminating ,,even lowerered the size to 150-then 400 .. Not a good day Bruce -OH, they are in my IRC pic Album for all to se "Brucedownunder" good stuff this line wire. Bushboy |
