FYI, particularly the Tassie Members. An article from "The Advocate" in Tassie on an old burnt out Railcar we are restoring at Downs Steam Railway Museum here in Toowoomba. I've had a small part to play, helping out here & there & also calibrating the new electronic speedo. Runs up & down our tacks quite OK. Still a way to go but progressing steadily. Thanks for the comments Aaron. Yes, there certainly a lot of work done & still a fair bit to do. When completed, it will need to be inspected & certified. As well, we have to train drivers (Pun) who will also need to know all of QR's & the National rules & regs etc as well as having suitable medical certificates. As an organisation, we have to satisfy the various legal requirements etc which are many before we are allowed out on the main line. We recently had all our rolling stock checked for cracked wheels & axles. The Diesel Loco had a suspected cracked axle in one of the bogeys & this unfortunately was confirmed. At present, we are dismantling an old spare bogey & getting at least one axle/wheels refubished. Removing the bogey from the Loco & swapping axles over is going to be a very big job. All good fun Brian ChopperP |

It used to do a regular Sunday run from Burnie to Penguin along the coast. A very pretty trip. The cost of insurance for running on the main line was a killer and the Burnie council were looking at disposing of it before the fire. I'm glad it has found a new home. Jim VK7JH MMedit  MMBasic Help |

Thanks for the replies & comments. Much appreciated. Apparently, the cost of insurance has come down quite a bit in the past decade. still substantial though. More updates, progress etc can be found here Taken today ChopperP |

When I was a kid there used to be a man walking along the train in the station with a long handled hammer. He used to hit each wheel and listen to the sound. Are they still checked this way? Klaus |

HI Tinker Crack testing was done with ultrasonic's so I was told. I wasn't there when they did it. I came in a day or two later & the bearing caps were still off the offending axle. (My job to put them back on). A transducer was placed at at the ends & reflected sounds recorded & measured. The guy doing it, did it in his own time & at his own expense so I was informed. I assume they did the same sort of thing for the wheels somehow. A couple of our guys had to go back around the rolling stock inspected, remove axle covers to look for serial numbers as each one has to be certified & recorded etc. Not sure why it wasn't done at the time. I had a good look at pictures and information on the link page, in fact I spent a long time looking at all of it, That was great thanks. The wheel set for the DP13, would they have a date cast into the spoked wheels? Cheers Aaron Off The Grid |

There is a lot of stuff on their pages. Glad you liked it Aaron. Not sure if the date is on the wheels or not. Will find out. ChopperP |

For Revlac (& others) Some rail rolling stock axle & tyre stamps accessible in our workshop. Some photos not that clear. Some rotated to get stamping roughly horizontal Most appear to just have the year of manufacture plus serial numbers. BTW, the steel tyres are heat fitted to the actual wheels. The running surfaces have a standard profile with tolerances depending on the application. They can be machined to get back to the correct profile. Once they get below a set diameter, they need to be replaced. I did not know this until a year or so ago. The last photo shows an axle ready to be sent away to get the wheel tyres re-profiled. It was not in a good condition when removed from the bogey & the traction motor removed from the axle. Hadn't been serviced for years prior to decommissioning. They are heavy looking wheels, not something one could lift by hand and stick in the lathe to fix. HaHa .. Used to do that with smaller scale, Model railway gear. I would say most wheel sets would likely be original (The wheel itself) unless some get damaged at some stage, There could be a few different axle changes in the life of a wheel set/bogey and numerous tyre changes depending on service life, might be lucky to see a wheel set that has matching dates all around. I have a picture of the date cast into the wheel on an old bogey, can see the date as 17-12-1909, perhaps I could have rotated picture, I'm not up to rotating the wheel. This wheel did look similar to the DP13 wheel from a distance. Its the odd wheel/Axel out of the 2 bogeys here, the axle date is 1969 and 40t, I'm not sure what the numbers on the tire's mean.(picture did not upload) I won't go into to much detail about this one ATM as it will be a project for another topic at some stage. Thanks for pictures and the info, and I'm learning bit more about how these restorations proceed. Would that Diesel Loco Axle be machined at Ipswich? Cheers Aaron Off The Grid |

Hi Aaron, Than ks for your comments. The Loco axle will be send to a local firm which has the only lathe big enough up here to handle it. Expensive but we do get "Mates Rates". There's a 6-8 wk turn around time at the moment. This one should be relatively easy for them. (They had fun doing the Steam Loco ones as they have counter weights built into the driving wheels. They had to be balanced prior to machining. See Photo). Speaking of damage. We did notice yesterday that some of the "spokes" on one of the Loco wheels were bent a tad. May have been a "Casting Error" Some more Piccies FYI. Was looking of one of DP13"s wheels but couldn't find any. Other Drive Axle Showing 2 of the 4 Chipped Teeth. Hopefully, they can be repaired. Hi Ian We were wondering today about the strength of the repair weld at the joint. Also, we think that the teeth were broken when the wheels were re-tyred. I plan to be there on Thursday Brian ChopperP |

I was thinking maybe something fell between the gears at some stage. but that could also be the case when they re-tyred it, Find any bits? I have found some odd things in the bottom of a gearbox, and parts in the bottom of an engine sump, heard some jokes about that, or maybe they where true. Cheers Aaron Off The Grid |

Aaron Got to be careful of what I say & show. There are hammer marks on the sleeve halves that fit between the wheel & the tyre. So violence was used on it at sometime in it's previous life. Suspect a "Knockometer" hit the gears. No bits were found in the messy gunk at the bottom of the "Sump". The wheelset with the good teeth is at least 25mm smaller in diameter & has no evidence of being mistreated. Most likely hasn't been retyred. We think if something did fall into the gears it would have damaged the motor gear and / or bent the motor shaft. The bogey has been out of service for a good number of years now. ChopperP |
