Hi All, The Tip on my Weller TCP is not much over 12 months old, but it's never been that great in staying tinned properly; almost as if the coating is bad. Looking on RS, (where it came from), they list 4 different 0.8mm tips, but I can't distinguish the difference. Can anyone offer advice? They list:-
RS Part# Weller Code 661-510 4PT07-1 661-649 4PT08-1 661-526 4PTP7-1 661-655 T0054134899
I'd be tempted to just get one of each, but rather not have unsuitable ones as opposed to a few spares. Thanks Phil. |

Radio Parts stock Weller spares too, may be worth a look. These tips also have a rated temperature, not absolutely certain but a fair guess might be the last figure "7" or "8" might be the temperature. There is often that number stamped on the back of the tip. http://www.radioparts.com.au/search-products?productsearch=Weller Cheers, Tony. |

Thanks, Was aware of the temp codes, 7,8 x100°F. Just not sure about the PT O7 Vs PT P7 variants for example. The existing bit just has the temp code. The current one is an 8 which is probably too hot. Most others I have are 7's (bigger though). The one in in now is a 661-649 & the packet (still in the drawer!) says lead free... Wondering if that means it's coating is for lead free solder & that is the reason I've always found it not as good as my older tips (As in 20+ years older). Phil. |

There are two different families of Weller tips. One has the conventional magnet and operates a reed relay in the usual fixed temperature self contained irons. The other type are used in the hugely expensive "soldering stations" that have a variable temperature control and a digital temperature readout. These are physically quite different. I have never had to buy tips. I was once very lucky and worked for a company that went broke. I was given a huge handful of brand new assorted Weller tips that I have been using for over thirty years, and still have plenty left. So the mysteries of Weller part numbers are something I know nothing about. Cheers, Tony. |
