Hi Glenn, My powerjack module has arrived and I have a question regarding connecting to it. On page 3 of your thread you posted a nice diagram of the connections to the 20 pin header. I am curious about the battery type SW (pins 15-18) connections, I do not have the cable nor the switch that connects to that. Is that something for battery charging through this inverter? Should I worry about that switch - I do not charge my LYP batteries through the inverter, its a stand alone system. Nobody mentioned anything about that switch, trolled through all 123 pages on the energy matters forum thread as well as oztules site of his inverter conversions. Another question if I may, you show one connector has a 12V output, would that power two small, non display, 12V temperature controllers? The 4 fans I'm using are 24V types and I'll run two in series straight from the battery, they are turned on by this temperature controller's relay. Thanks Klaus |

Hi Tinker Yes thats for using the inverter as a battery charger, but dont go there. From what I've read, its works OK with the standard EI cored transformers, but not the toroidal, it will blow the mosfets if you try. Not 100% sure on the supply capabilities of the 12v feed, but I'm running a 12v 300ma fan from it ok. So I would say yes it should be ok to use it for the fan controllers. I also use the 48v for 4 x 12v fans in one of the units I made, but used a dropping resistor in there as well.... the unit spends most of the time in the 54-58v range, and the fans go too hard in bang bang mode without some sort of resistance to pull them down to operating speeds you can live with. Forget the switch.... unless you wish to monitor the thing as a charger. They work well as a charger and an inverter, but changing between the two is scary to say the least.... unless you religioulsly turn the thing off before releasing the shore power and going back to inverter. Don't forget the pictures ( I like to see other folks suffer like me..... ..............oztules Village idiot...or... just another hack out of his depth |

Have already token many pics of the complete toroid rewind, its not finished yet though. I sincerely hope the suffering now is worth the final result. I will start a separate thread for my conversion soon, I have done quite a few things differently and prospective 'sufferers' might benefit from them . Klaus |

Another PJ module question if I may ask: Is it safe to connect the modules to a 48V benchtop supply without having the big toroid connected to the heat sinks? Nor any 230V connection preferably, if that is OK? Reason is that I would like to check the operation of the little 3 wire fan I attached to the end of the heat sink tunnel. I would like to have this running slow all the time and speed up as the heat sink gets warm. Oztules mentioned something about connecting a resistor in parallel to the NTC. I can easily warm up the heat sink with a small heat gun for temperature testing. Thanks. Klaus |

You can put a 20k pot across the NTC of the PJ to emulate temp change, but that does not tell the whole story... and I'm not sure what will. They have programmed the fan cantrol in the pj ... well differently. There seems to be no set rhyme or reason for it's antics, and thats why I just ignore it, and use my own cooling system. There is a 2 inch three wire fan connected to the pj outputs ( in my home brew unit), but it never really comes on that I am aware of... but it ticks the box for the PJ to run. Connecting the pj up without a transfromer and AC fold back, will give you about 2 seconds of run time.... the pj will soft start, and try to find it's operating point.... when it sees no output variance for it's input changes, it knows it has failed at being an inverter, and shuts down. A small transformer for bench testing is fine, and you can run it as long as you wish then. Any small tranny of 240v:30v ( 48v system) is fine.... fair margin for error as there will be no load. Then you can play plenty. My final thoughts is... forget their fan.... but you may do better at translating their ideas than me. ...........oztules Village idiot...or... just another hack out of his depth |

Thanks oztules, I really appreciate the time you take for your comprehensive replies. Today I put on the final 'hand' of the primary winding of my ex 3Kw aerosharp toroid and its become very heavy - too heavy to mess around for testing. So I will take up your small transformer suggestion above and find out just what that PJ fan does. I found a neat 12V, 3 wire, 70mm fan that I mounted at the end of the heatsink 'tunnel'. I was hoping to get that fan to run slow all the time, to keep the air moving past the heatsinks. I have another 4 x 80mm fans (2 pushing, 2 pulling air) mounted on the aerosharp cabinet, one pair will be controlled like your fans are, the other goes 'bang-bang style' at a slightly higher start temperature. My inverter conversion post is at the typists and will appear here shortly. Should be worth a chuckle or two from experts like yourself while reading about my antics. Klaus |

Greetings Gizmo, I have a tower that resembles the Eiffel tower.I plan to put a VAWT on top.I plan to buy 6 aluminum one meter blades but would like to know what diam. is optimum with the use of 6 vertical aluminum blades 24", 36" My tower is 125 ft. tall. My expected wind average will be approximately 12 mph... Sincerely , Resonantman 11:12pm 12/14/15 .I want 200rpm's from my vawt... |

Way to far off topic Resonantman. Start a new thread. The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Resonantman, You may be new to forums and if so there is a expression of "Hijacking a Thread" which is what you have done here. Basically you have posted into a existing thread of a different topic to what your question is related to. Start your own thread on the subject you have a question about, then someone will reply to your question. Can I suggest you post your question in the "windmill" section of the forum. Please don't see this as a no reply, just a point of advice to posting your question on a forum. Sometimes it just works |
