Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I realise this is an old repeating topic, but I want to build the stock standard desulphator that most of you probably know all about. It is the design that uses the 555 timer IC, 220 uH inductor etc. This is the Alastair Couper design and featured in Home Power 77 back in June/July 2000 and from comments appears to be a proven design. My problem is obtaining two components or their equivalents, and these are:

IRF9Z34 Mosfet- Looking at using a IRF9540N which appears to be suitable (Any problems with this?)

Fast recovery diode G1826CT 6A, 100V - This appears to be no longer available and I can't even locate a specification to find out its speed. Is anyone able to suggest a substitute and in particular one that is available at either Jaycar or Altronics as I can access both those easy. I have looked everywhere on various forums and no one appears to have suggested an alternative.

Regards,
Dave

I think I used your suggested replacement FET. Can you buy that at Jaycar? Main parameters are Rds ON, Idrain, and Vgs (turn-on threshold).

I used a common fast diode, probably Jaycar. I can check in a few days when I travel to where my desulphator is.

Hi all

Simple desulphator 12 and 24 volt circuits with explanation.

2015-03-11_141529_desulfator.pdf

I have sourced both the fet and fast recovery diode on fleabay the only problem is the inductors, but reading up on them it seems that other values will work in the circuit the other option is some old computer power supply as they have some in them.

You will need an inductance meter to check them and if not somewhere near required value you can add extra windings.

All the best

My diodes are BYV28-200, however they were used in our product so Jaycar may not stock them.

IRF9Z34 Mosfet

This is available from RS Components
http://nz.rs-online.com/web/p/mosfet-transistors/5410806/?searchTerm=IRF9Z34+Mosfet&autocorrected=y&relevancy-data=636F3 D3226696E3D4931384E44656661756C74266C753D656E266D6D3D6D61746368616C6C7061727469616C26706D3D5E5B5C707B4C7D5C707B4E647D5C7 07B5A737D2D2C2F255C2E5D2B2426706F3D3926736E3D592673723D4175746F636F727265637465642673613D697266397A33346E206D6F736665742 673743D4B4559574F52445F4D554C54495F414C5048415F4E554D455249432673633D592677633D4E4F4E45267573743D495246395A3334204D6F736 6657426

Wowa...That's a hang of a link, but if you go to RS Components and enter the IRF9Z34 they are there.

Mmmmmm..... All the long winded link seems to do is bring up some horse s**t advert. Sorry about that. But dialling in the IRF MOSFET in the RS Components search thing does work.
Cheers
Pete'.

That is why you need to use this function on the forum to insert a link.

Gents,
Thanks for your responses, but they only partially answered my enquiry, i.e. what are easily obtainable components (mosfet and diode). As I mentioned, I tried to find the specs for the diode online and couldn't find them anywhere, so if I had this, finding a substitute would be much easier.

Davef - thanks for your diode information.

Bob (Vk4AYQ) That is the same circuit diagram I am using (I didn't post the link as I was in a hurry and didn't have time to research how I insert a link or diagram)

Maybe there is someone out there who still could help me?

Regards,
Dave

Hi Dave

I have been able to source all the electronic components via fleabay but am still waiting on the inductors to be delivered so would suggest that you have a good search on fleabay,
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/20Pcs-ORIGINAL-IRF9Z34N-IRF9Z34-TO-220-Z17-/171555335859?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item27f1 7eaeb3

I also got some fast diodes 1000 volt 6 amps from ebay but cant find the link for you sorry, they where a pack of 50 but reasonably priced.

Found them

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/20pcs-FR607-6A-1000V-Fast-Recovery-Diodes-/290562415975?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item43a6d e9d67&autorefresh=true

All the best
