I am building a wind turbine out of a 3 phase Baldor 2hp motor I turned down the rotor and am installing magnets. I want to build Gizmo's Picaxe based Windmill Controller/Charger. that uses's the picaxe 28x chip I found the chip on eBay for $29. after shipping.
From what I understand you program the chip on the board. using the 9 pin serial plug. What is on the other end?
I have a few questions about the Items in the case like.
#1 the circuit diagram dose not show a 3 phase bridge rectifier before the Battery or is that what the 4 mosfets are.
#2 what size resistors are used for the dump load I take it that is the long black object on the left behind the circuit board?

Looks like fun I want to build the data logger next.
Thanks for your help

Hi, i replyed to your question on the picaxe forum.

As i had commented you can get USB to serial cables far cheaper than the crap RevEd sells well over priced, for example i have found all adaptor cables that use the HL340 chip work with Picaxe, so search ebay for "HL340 USB to serial" and you should find a few like this one ..........

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-to-9-pin-serial-cable-USB-to- serial-COM-port-USB-RS232-HL-340-A978-EW-/331197929551?pt=LH _DefaultDomain_15&hash=item4d1cef584f

Just understand not all cables will work with picaxe as some have the siginals inverted, so any cable that states TTL will not work, only cables that has true RS 232 data works with picaxe.
Basically its still TTL with a inverter chip added to the board, which makes it compatable with picaxe.(RS232)

Pete.

Hi Pete,

Do you know if the HL-340 chip set will work on linux.
I have the axe027 cable and a couple pl203's but no joy as far as reliability, sometimes one will work for awhile and not the next, a pain for logging.

Bob,

The HL340 will work with linux, but there is no drivers for linux supplied.

I know of others setting up their own form of driver in linux but dont know myself.

Most times why the cable stops working (more so with laptops) is the settings for USB "Power Saving" which you should be able to turn off in controls to solve the problem.

Thanks for the response. I did find the cable you recommend. The reason I went with the 28x is. It was the chip Gizmo used to make his charge controller for his wind turbine and he also has the code for it.So I thought why not use the same thing. His controller has been working a long time now.
I remember back in high school we had a class on Basic and I enjoyed it. And when I got into building my own wind turbine I thought it would be fun to get into electronics. I want to build a charge controller and a data logger first. Then with the free power run all my outside electric IE water fountain and pumps the lights around my fire pit charge all my battery operated tools. With the picaxe system I can make them really cool.

Pete,

Thanks for the reply, I'll let you how it goes.
I think my axe027 cable may be faulty; but I'll try the upower -1 trick on the others.
