I want to make a really efficient fan. Iam using a vortex shrouding like the popular vornado fan. I hope to use a small pv solar cell to power it. I need an efficient motor that isn't to complex. I was thinking of using the bedini motor with two batteries. (WAIT)!!! before Iam burnt at the stake or completely ignored, Iam not trying to achieve overunity. The bedini motor just seems to be very efficient, running on a battery for long periods ,between charges. Maybe an axil flux motor ?Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated. |

What size motor are we thinking? Diameter. Nothing special about a Bedini motor other that its a good example of how incorrect use of test equipment can give misleading figures. Stay away from it. PC cooling fans are pretty efficient, and you can buy models with ball bearings, low power usage and near silent operation. Cheap too, and a wide range of sizes, some with a speed control wire. What is your goal here: do you have a task for the fan when your done, or are you experimenting? If you've got a task in mind then I'd recommend figuring how much air you want to move, designing a fan to suit and then designing the motor so it'll spin efficiently at whatever speed the fan needs to spin at to move that volume of air. If your experimenting, then build the motor first and see what work you can get out of it for a given input. You can definitely power a fan with a small solar panel and a motor - I do that on a solar heater I've made. I use a capacitor to smooth out the peaks and troughs from the solar panel. In my case I didn't bother to figure out the volume of air required or the speed for the fan required to move that volume, so it runs too slowly and doesn't move enough air. I'd have been far better off using a slightly larger panel and taking the PC cooling fan route, as recommended above by Gizmo. My personal view is the bedini motor isn't actually all that efficient, and I'd recommend checking out the mythbusters episode on it. It'll also get less efficient when you try and get it do some work (such as turning a fan). |

For a bit of fun last friday night I dragged out that blower fan I scored out of the scrap bin in a place I worked. It's an old Dawn model 16" enclosed fan with a 1/2hp 3 phase motor attached atleast 50 years old. I had a ABB VFD laying around also salvaged for peanuts so hooked it up after doing an ohms test on the motor leads. My mate came around who is a blacksmith and was amazed at the amount of flow coming out at 50hz saying it's much better than the 2 blowers he has on his forge at home. I ran it down to 12hz and a gentle firm breeze was still produced and the best part at 50hz it was only drawing 0.3 amps so pretty efficient aswell. So sometimes the scrap bin is much better than trying to reinvent the wheel wind or whatever..... |

The goal was a 12in desk fan, that could use a small pv cell. I also was going for a retro 1930s look. Exposed coil and brass plated frame. The bedini motor is out. There is a new type of fan called (tip magnetic drive). Instead of the motor being behind the blades, it is around them. This eliminates the shadow and turbulence the motor causes. That is what I liked about the bedini. It had that one big coil and I could put the magnets on the out side of the blades. There isn't a motor with these qualities that isn't a bedini ,and is efficient is there? Bryan 1, By a blower fan you meant a centrifugal fan ? They are efficient. There are some hand built wooden centrifugal that look pretty cool. Might be an good option, put the axil running vertical. |
