Not being an electronics wiz, could I get an opinion on this Shunt Regulator from Oakley. There's more info in this PDF. Could this be modified to handle say 12V 35-40A out. Can it manage the expected voltage going in from an F&P...if not what mods would be required? Is there a better kit on offer somewhere else? The kit price looks REAL good to me....and I'd like to know if a few mods would achieve a usable product. Greg Greg Just North of Brisbane in Redcliffe OZeTrade.net |

Hi Greg. I havn't built one, but I think its a pretty good design. Basically it just clamps down the battery voltage when it gets to high. I think it can handle a few hundred watts, so would work for the F&P. Plus you could buy a couple at that price and connect them across the same battery bank with no problems. Nice simple design, set and forget. If I needed another regulator, I would buy one. Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

It uses common IRFZ44N mosfets that oatley sell cheap. You could add some extra's to a external board with some flying wires for more efficient and more current handling. |

Thanks Chris. When I get this board assemble and done some testing, I might get you to show me how to do that. Greg Greg Just North of Brisbane in Redcliffe OZeTrade.net |

Hiya Guy's, I made up one of those Oatley shunt regulators to suit my nife batteries which float around 16 volts. It's been about 6 months since I made it and I've been away working most the time so I put some heating wire as a dumpload and the shunt reg looks after itself. As Chris stated it would pay to mount the mosfets on a seperate board and use decent heatsinks and it will handle the amps your after.

Hello, about the Oatley shunt reg . If ya gunna increase the handling capacity , better take a look at the terminal connections and the pcb tracks. these will need to be modified(larger) ,by thick wire or whatever . Go for fairly big heatsinks also on the exteran mosfets-maybe even take the 3 off the board also. Nice little simple unit, but Glenn's sophisticated one has all the bells and whistles. Bruce Bushboy |
