I was using my soldering station the other day and a strange noise came out followed by smoke. It was my fault as I was using it with a small 150 watt invertor I have that plugs in to the lighter socket in the ute. (mod sine wave I think) Worked well untill the reg came in and it started to buzz and then smoke. I would like to know if anyone has one as I need to know the risistor value as it is now black.. Hi Amack I cant help with an exact value, but would suggest you measure the burnt resistor as it may still be somewhere near its value as the paint is burned but it is intact. However I think there is a fault in the circuit that made it burn, as it looks to be a power circuit resistor. indicating that it had way to much power running through it so there could be a short somewhere else in the heater circuit. Measure the circuit resistance at the board and then unplug the solder iron and check again, also measure resistance to earth the same. Also check the circuit board for track jump as a square wave inverter is inclined to cause arcing between tracks if very close. next suggestion is to take it back to Mr Smith shop as some of the guys there may know how to fix it. You are kidding right Bob, with taking it back to Mr Smith for repairs. The Dick Heads dont even stock a resistor to repair it with, lead alone know what one is anymore. I think Gizmo has a DS iron but might not be the same model. Pete. Sometimes it just works |

This is a differnet model to mine. Mines got the little temperature meter, and its a completely different looking circuit board too. Replacing that resistor is only half the problem, you'll need to find out whats shorted out elsewhere in the circuit. That resistor would not have failed on its own, its a sympton of another problem. It looks like there is a opto-coupler driving a triac, which in turn is turning the iron heater on and off. Chances are those components are OK. Check the diodes and that zenner for a short. I cant quit see what the IC is, a LM354? Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Hi Pete They don't call me misty optic for nothing you know. There is a bit of a wiz manager at the one up here and I have had some success with help on things, most though are brain dead not even sure what a resistor is or was. If I go to town now I go to Jaycar as their staff are more switched on and the manager is a HAM. My solution to fixing these type of things is to buy a better one. All the best Bob Foolin Around |

I bought one of those about 20 years ago as my first soldering station. Was a sweet unit, and I gave it to a friend when I upgraded to a Hakko. The original iron came with a circuit diagram in the manual. Maybe someone has one laying about.... I suspect the square wave inverter killed the triac. Time to buy a sine wave inverter, also required for a lot of tool battery chargers (Makita etc). The same unit was on special for $40 at DS recently. I went to both the local stores where one zombie tried to sell me the iron without the stand, and the other store zombie tried to sell me a $100 one as stock was out. I only wanted it as a van iron for on the road. F%$@ DickSmith - my local Jaycar is great and getting better by the day. A big G'day to Ben at Jaycar Cairns. sPuDd.. It should work ...in theory |

I have put the meter on it and It is weird.( It's on Ohm and and auto range) One way I test it, Eg red to the out side pin black too inner it reads 1.245meg ohm but it climbs to 1.9 meg. When I test it with the black on the outer leg it reads 29.5 meg ohm and it to will not settle and climbs to 34-35 meg omh. The IC is LM 358N. Yes the opto does run the Triac. The PCB board has marked on it it was made by: XYTRONICS 66-213085-22 TENT 20 Well might look for another iron. Even if I found out what risister it was I could'nt re-solder it in anyway. Any recomendations on irons? *Note to self 1. Make it thick 2.Make it heavy. 3.Make it stronger than it should be. 4. Don't rush the first job as the second job will cost more and take mor |

sPuDd, Our local Dick Smith store is also crap. Most of the stuff in there is crap now too. You ask a simple question like were are the voltage regs and they look at you like you are from another planet. The only thing they can sell you is a new phone or a TV made in China. We have now got a JAYCAR in Shepparton and I have asked them for info and Peter the manager was unreal. I will never go to a Dick Smith shop again. Well enough bagging DS.. \ Andrew *Note to self 1. HI Crew There is other story from Dick head several years ago as had power black out in my area for nearly 8 hours so l connect invertor to from my car battery I was using it with a small DS 300 watt invertor to run my house couple 60 watts light bulbs working fine however got my TV, Phone and video running went up in smoke in matter of second but not house two 60 watts light bulbs still burning fine plus receiveing small electric sling when l put my finger on invertor while is running as l resume is very poor quality of unstable dirty sine waves and this kind of piss of junk should never be sold to DicK Smith shop and if l did receive nasty electric shock will be sue but if l got kill l can't sue them as l am already in death hole now own by Woolworth store . Resistor value is 220 ohm / 0.5W and it is a zener resistor for 358 input, so probably apparatus will work again, after R2 replaced. :) . So did mine. I was in a small island where sunpanel and inverter were the only choice ... |
