Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

The story always seems to begin with
".. and it was all going smoothly."

Time for the pictures.

I wonder if the tantalum cap went short then the gate drive IC.
Some EG002 boards have electrolytic caps now. I wonder why.
Cheaper parts? Or better to use caps that fail open...
Dunno.

Both legs of the 50Hz 1/2 bridge blew.

The DC-Dc converter (50V -> 12V) survived, which drives the EG002.

No problems really, the biggest issue is the stink of magic smoke
we enjoyed just as I had finished cooking dinner.
I have a standby unit already in operation.

Welcome to the 'magic smoke' club poida .

One needs at least one event to become a member. Membership is free BTW, well, if one does not count the cost of the blown parts .

I do my testing in the shed - no 'magic' smoked dinners .

I think Poida was eligible to join the magic smoke club long before this.

Tinker I can't help think of that scene from Apocalypse Now and you saying I love the smell of magic smoke in the morning.

I always get loads of splinters up my fingernails when this happens scratching my head trying to figure out why and I have never worked it out yet! Just seems power semi's are made to let go every now and then usually when you are confident you have a working circuit and it's been happily working for some while, comiserations!

Eay Poida, missed your interesting posts....

Oz referred to those tantalum caps in the past being not suitable for this particular gate drive situation. .in fact he tried just ceramic and said he had problems too.. maybe something in that...
I think it works !!
