Hello All,
Trying to source parts for an OzInverter, but I'm having a really hard time finding old GTIs for toroids which I imagine is going to be straight out impossible very soon. Does anyone know of any other equipment that might be salvaged to get suitable transformer cores?

I have been looking for a source of bare cores from China, there are a number of suppliers on Alibaba.com. Freight costs are going to be the most expensive part though. There are only 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don't. |

Are they laminated steel? Something one could make with a plasma cnc maybe? |

They are made from special silicon steel. Did you try the company I messaged you about Aerosharps? There are only 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don't. |

Sent a bloke called Craig an email. If the first one goes well I'd like to make 3-4 inverters. |

Thanks for the tip Madness. I owe you a tasty beverage...
I was hoping you could offer some advice on what toroids from the pic would be suitable. Ideally I would like to make two units in the 4-6kW range. I was thinking the matched pairs on the bottom right and bottom left?

If you can find something for free or for peanuts, that is definitely the best way.
Or you can buy a brand new bare toroidal core with much better grade silicon steel than the Chinese melted down scrap recycled crushed Holdens, Fords, and beer cans.
And you can order it in any size.
Its absolutely true that heavy things like house bricks, and lead acid batteries, and toroidal cores are horribly expensive to import, and the locally made in oZ stuff is very likely better anyway, as well as cheaper. Cheers, Tony. |

Ryan, there should be a visible label on them, if it has 3000 w on it then buy it.
I was thinking that three 2000w units together might be ok too, but you'de need to remove some off the centre, so try and get 3000w units.
If the label isn't clear what wattage it is, then go by the secondary amps. That will be listed on the label. 2000w unit will say secondary 0-250V/8.7A
3000w unit will have secondary 0-250v/13A
Dunno what you are getting charged for those, but I got another 3000w for $20 recentlyEdited by renewableMark 2018-03-29 Cheers Caveman Mark Off grid eastern Melb |

Jackpot, this is one type of label used on the 3 KW units but they used several different manufacturers so not all 3KW ones have 3000 on the label. Multiplying the current by volts on the label will tell the truth.
I like Coopers homebrew :)
2 of those smaller ones would probably make a nice 4KW inverter stacked together, are you able to post photos of the labels? Edited by Madness 2018-03-29 There are only 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don't. |
