At my holiday farm shack, I have a 12V battery running a water pressure pump. This pump provides water pressure to the taps in the building, from the rain water tank. The pump runs on a pressure switch.
There is various plumbing running a kitchen, bathroom, etc.
When I leave the farm, I turn off the power to the pump. This is so a dripping tap does not lead to an empty water tank, flat and ruined battery, and burnt out pump.
Unfortunately, a family member recently visited and when they left the farm they failed to turn off the pump power supply.
Next visitor found an empty water tank, failed pump and ruined battery.

I imagine a timer switch on the power supply to the pump which automatically turns off after a day or so. I someone is still at the farm they could turn this timer switch on each day. If they leave without turning off the pump power supply, the system survives.

I want to avoid something with buttons and a programmable screen, which could be easily fiddled with and messed up by some fool. Just a simple push on.

Do any of you backshedders know of a suitable simple timer?

Yes!

There are little electronic Multi function boards on flea bay that do this. They are in fact latching.

Some have displays, some don't but all you would have to do is wire a second little push button to start switch to a panel with the board in a box and you would be fine.

Look for Trigger Cycle timer. There are some variation but this is the sort of thing you want. You can set you cycle for 12 hours 6 or whatever you want.

You may have to sort the relay for the current you are using.

Thanks for your suggestions but lazy me wanted to just buy a consumer product.
I might end up building something from parts like these, put in a jiffy box and mounted on the wall with a button ON for a day.

These are ready made. Just search LVD BATTERY to find them. Preferably I would like to see even higher set voltages so the system would only come on in daylight hours. Don't like a battery dancing around the bottom all day. Bridging in a resistor could easily change that, but this will protect the battery.

Board modifications are not necessary. Adding one or two diodes to the negative terminal input voltage will raise the transition voltages by .6V for each diode. This assumes the positive is switched. Diode stripe end of diode to the battery. Pump current does not pass through the diode. Control should be as close to battery as possible so wire loss does not factor into voltage sensing.Edited by hotwater 2017-12-13

Look at this. It appears to have many settings up to 24 hours, at 5 / 12 / 24 volt types . . . $3.25 + ship
