Australian old school CB radio was 27mhz so your set will no way work with an old one of these antennas

The uhf band is 476/477mhz so, no, an old school cb won't work here either

The vhf 136-174 mhz won't work with either a 27 mhz or a uhf antenna

you may get antenna tuner and a long length of wire to work, but the antenna tuner will cost as much as a second hand uhf unit.

You will get a long wire with a few turns around the portable's stubby antenna to work, to get more range/stations on receive.

Perhaps you could find a pair of handheld uhf with rechargeable batteries at (like)supercheap auto, then if the stubby aerial is removable, connect an uhf whip antenna

You possibly need two of your Baofeng units to talk together on vhf

The attraction of no one else on the vhf may be outweighed with limited distance.

I have no doubt some person could calculate the measurements and number of turns of wire to rewire an existing whip antenna or make a new one using a fishing rod blank

I still have my first walkie talkies that with a new 9 volt battery each, we could talk about three back yards apart. They were the size of half a brick and had a pull out antenna 1.2 meters long. We were so "cool". They cost around $30 for the pair in the mid 60's. My dad must have been rich. 9 volt batteries cost around 90 cents so we had to pool together our pocket money to get them. This did not happen often so was a real treat.

Ok are there any antennas that would get me better range with minimal faffing about?

Nothing is easy when doing modifications!

Do more research eg eBay, www - forums

eBay aerial for a few $s might work, then has your radio got bnc aerial connection?
If not more expense.

Have you contacted the supplier to inquire if any aerials are available?

This will wake up the neighbors, except you need a suitable antenna and lots of cabling and probably a licence.
I can't see where or what power supply. Ask seller for more detailed information.

Those transceivers are designed to operate on the amateur radio bands (2m and 73cm). You need a licence to operate those radios.

An amateur foundation licence isn't hard to get - your local club probably runs courses.
