Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi All

It looks like it is happening finally.

http://www.gizmag.com/tesla-battery-powerwall/37283/?utm_source=Gizmag+Subscribers&utm_campaign=7ba3ede8bf-UA-2235360-4& utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_65b67362bd-7ba3ede8bf-91528769

This could be the breakthrough to solve our battery problems.

All the best

Price looks not bad, in Australia it will be twice as much for starters.

I did not see much technical information like depth of discharge and longevity of the device.
(Sorry if I missed it)

Most probably we will see something half the price or quarter, once initial hype goes and other countries start mass producing the units.

Interesting if we don't have other battery developments that are close to completion and even better and cheaper.

Well time will tell

Hi George

Thin on tech info but the concept is there a life expectancy would be nice to have as we do not have one for LIPO designs yet but from what I hear if used and not abused 10 years should be achievable but only time will tell there, the superior charge and discharge cycle from what I understand gives about twice the capacity of a rated Lead Acid unit so the 10 KW rated unit would have the same storage capacity compared to cycle requirements of a lead acid battery at 40% discharge for longevity as the Lipo is still happy at 80% discharge.

Maybe some educated and experienced comments by our members that have experience with the LIPO for solar storage would help.

The comment in the article says that it will be an open source design criteria so it can be copied by other makers may produce a more cost effective product in the longer term. Time will tell.

All the best

Bob

Great stuff, but google sugar batteries, sounds crazy, but sugar is high in energy and I wouldn`t be surprised if that is the way rather than Li. But heh it`s happening there is enough demand out there for our commercial system to get interested. Energy storage is attracting the money finally.
We come from the land downunder.

Hi Vic

The storage is the week link in the systems and also the most expensive, I like the nickle Iron batteries for a stationary storage system as they are proven to last for many years and are as fool proof as a chemical reactor can be, they are cheaper per AH than LIPO units, but have a problem with charge / discharge resistance and to make them perform like a Lipo they would need a capacitor bank as a buffer.

All the best
