Hi.
I would like to use a 12V 40w solar panel to run a 12v water pump.
But without a battery

I've contacted several solar shops and they ALL say I need a battery for their controllers to work - and I don't want to use a battery because it makes everything to bulky and heavy.

There are many solar water fountains available but they all seem to be small 2W-10W which is too small.

So I need a simple electrical thingy that caps or regulates the voltage coming out of the panel at no more than 12V so it doesn't blow the pump.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to where I could get such a thing. Hopefully premade as I dont have the electronics ability to put something together.

Only last week I lent my Tracer MPPT controller to a guy who wanted to do something similar and found that ... you need a battery to get the controller working.

He is now looking at a custom MPPT controller that will operate when the solar panel first starts to supply power to the load. It is not something you will to able to build.

I would suggest that you look at using a simple series regulator circuit. How much power does the pump draw? If it is something like 20-40Watts I would be surprised that the output voltage of the solar panel would be approaching the maximum allowed input voltage for a pump.

Has it got some sensitive electronics in it?

Type in Solar Pump Maximiser into your search engine, you`ll get many hits. From $25 to $1000`s. Also check out some of my threads, that will save me repeating myself and taking up 4m`s bandwidth.
