Less than ideal....
But another completely different way to go about all this is to scrounge an old car alternator and a suitably large electric motor, perhaps from a washing machine, or even a Briggs petrol engine.

Pretty ugly, but it is an ultra cheap and simple way to make a reliable high current voltage regulated 12 volt battery charger.
