Hi,

Am the proud owner of a 36V UPS and have been told to switch in the batteries first and then the mains in order to play with it. Have done so but still am wondering if I am doing the right thing as there is quite a loud bang when the relay clicks in.

If this is the right method to initially start a UPS, then can someone give me an explanation why that is so as I have also been told doing it the other way will fry the thing.

I use a blade switch from an electric fence system to switch the batteries on and that seems to be a cheap solution as buying an automotive high-Amp switch would be quite expensive. Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Hi Dom,,

I've used the 24v version many years and just make sure there is no load(stuff connected and switched on) , before the ups is up and running ,then switch things on ..

A few clunks is normal as the relay inside is doing it's thing ..

Just remember they do use some power ,even when they are idle.

will keep watching other reply's .. I could be a bit wrong in what I've been doing for years.

Why are you using 36v's --I've heard of 12 and 24 and 48 but not 36 ??????.

Thanks Bruce. OK, no load but is it batts on first and then mains on or vicky vercka?

36V is army surplus; looks like the army wants to make sure no one else can use it!

Your jokes are safe now!

Hi Dom,,

I've never used the "incoming" ac mains.. allways used the battery bank which was pumped up by the wind gennie or solar ...

If you are still connecting to the ac mains then ,I guess it's usual to just connect the mains first ,this charges the batts , then if mains fail ,the ups provides the ac power ,while the mains is down.

If you chuck the batteries out ,,,then you will have to provide a 36v BATTERY BANK ,, which will permanetly be connected to the ups--you have to provide that the battery bank is fully charged or the ups will cark it til you get 36v battery charged again..

now ,, you have to remember that some UPS's have a special (certain) way of turning them on ,if they are on batteries alone ..( you know,, holding this button down for so many seconds ,,etc..) thats what u have to find out,,!!!.

Hope I've helped ,,, how ya gettin along without that Rambo bugger thats gone wild up nth. Qld way ...
