Hi Giz, I just read your page about Modern Electronics, got quite a chuckle out of it too, untill I remembered that a particular four-eyed electronics store had resistors on special for 1cent each a few years back, and someone got the bright idea to go down and stock-up by buying 50 each of the entire E12 range! DOH! I'm gonna have to whip out the meter and start checkin' those values! Cheers, Simo EDIT: Hah! Atleast I've now got an excuse for all those designs that didn't work first go! |

Yeah the old "four-eyed electronics store" has lost some of its spark. As a teenager I spent many hours drooling over component trays and resistor packs ( untill I discovered cars and girls, in that order, funny how the girls follow the cars ). Now they are more interrested in selling mobile phones and TV's. The local branch has a bunch or component draws, but all the labels are wrong and everything is mixed up. I heard Dicksmith are actaully trying to phase out there electronics range completely as they make alot more money out of the TV's and that sorta junk... Jaycar is great though, not to far away from me and much better priced with heaps better range then DSE. |

heya Giz, Chris, Well there goes that excuse I had! I haven't found any dud/missmarked values. I didn't check all of each value, just one from each value, figured thats safe enough as they are still on their banding. I also noticed I'm almost due for re-stocking, would be nice if DSE have another 1c sale! I also spent hours per visit in the store when I was a kid. The first time I ever went into DSE, at about 6 or 7ish, there was an EA designed roulette wheel kit on display on the counter, this used about 100 LED's or something, the store manager switched it on for me and the spinning LED's had me hooked! I was spewin' when Dick sold out to woolies. I knew there would be changes. Yep, I heard the same about phasing out the components, and that was from a store employee. Seems all stores are the same in terms of stock. Mine has the same problem with empty draws and mislabelling. The latest catalogue lists six (yes six!) 7400 series IC's and a slightly better eight 4000 series!! wow. The other bugger is that they bought Tandy/RadioShack, who were basically useless but handy for a few things, now they're just full of DSE crap. Jaycar unfortunatelly seem to be heading in the same direction, the stores (and catalogue) are filled with useless 'gadgets' like pens that light up, hundreds of electronic toys and even an anti-bacterial UV toothbrush holder..... actually, that was quite usefull for erasing my eeproms and windowed PICs!!(as per SiliconChip mag) I frequent Altronics whenever I'm in the city, awesome range, good priced SMD components, and the store is full of components and not gadgets. The Perth store even has a whole aisle of bargain bins! If yer ever near one the new Eastern states stores, its worth dropping in. No I don't work for them.(but I would like to!) Cheers |

Well, I don't know that they (Jaycar) are likely to start minimising their component stock soon, but with their focus on the gadgets it wouldn't surprise me if they moved on in the next decade searching for bigger profits. But then thats just a prediction, and predictions have a very good reputation of making asses of the predicters! |
