Hey guys merry xmas! Has anyone got any advice on a security camera setup? The neighbours got robbed today while they were out, poor buggers got home to find the bad news. They came and asked me if I saw anything, but I hadn't. If there were cameras here I would have caught them going past. I have been thinking for a while to get a setup, but always put it off. Any advice appreciated. Cheers Caveman Mark Off grid eastern Melb |

I would have a few cameras, connected with POE (power over ethernet) hooked up to a system that continually sends any images containing movement to a remote host. No point in wireless, they will need batteries. And batteries don't get changed or recharged. So if you need cable for power, may as well do POE. Have cameras covering each other even if just in the corner. The remote host cost would be about $15 a month for 50 GB of storage. Rotate storage to delete old stuff first. Have proper access control so only you with hard password and 2 factor authentication can delete video. Can be done. The aim to to show people interfering with cameras. Have IR cameras too. Maybe with sound. If nothing is happening, then no data is sent to remote host. Bad people stalking around in view will cause continual frames of video uploaded. And the cat will cause it too. And the brushtails. I do not know of the legal requirements but I think all you need is a sign "warning: video surveillance in operation in this area" wronger than a phone book full of wrong phone numbers |

cameras Ive personally got this setup, from years ago, all superseded now, however you just need to hook it up to router (via Ethernet cable)and you can access it via the app ( rxcamview ) from anywhere. Has built in 1tb hdd, which can be upgraded if needed. It is cabled so if really long runs i wouldn't recommend it... there are 8ch versions too... when i brought it, it was wayyy more expensive, but surprisingly cheap now. I think it works !! |

You can also buy dummy cameras. Set up a dozen pointing in every direction, plus a big "under video surveillance sign" that should discourage all but a hardened professional. Cheers, Tony. |

I have one of those UL-TECH with the 8 cameras it is 1080n Quality isn't great but you can see whats going on. Also put in an SSD, A few dummy cameras around is a good idea, they are the ones you could have visible while capturing with the others. they will pick up moths flying past spiders, raindrops outside if not under a cover. They are ok, might get some better quality later when the prices are lower. I think one of them is on 30m of cable and video quality suffers a little, haven't tried the network part of it. 1080p will let you know something happened, but depending on distance from the camera the action happens you'll want to go at least 4MP to get something that is actually useful to the police. Agree with poida battery cameras are completely useless. |

Looks pretty good mark IMO. Heard of reolink before. Budget brand, but certainly not the 100% chinesium stuff you find on banggood etc. |

hello Mark I have UL-Tech wireless ones, would I recommend them, to begin with, the price is pretty reasonable, however, the camera is not weatherproof like they say they are, I been thru 2 camera in 12 months that have no protection, I have one mount under the eave has worked perfectly. I am glad I bought min through an Aussie company, I do not think I would have gotten the replacement cameras. For the motion-activated camera, I would look at the price difference between them and the next size HHD. 24/7 you will need a bigger HDD before it burns over the old files. I saw these the other day, they look like they have everything that Peter suggested. Dick Smith, Reolink 4mp NVR 2TB HDD KIT Thanks Andy |

Thanks Andy, their 5mp ones aren't much dearer Here Mine will be all under eaves, so that's nothing for me to worry about, but it's not great that they are marketed as outdoor yet fail. Does the motion detect work well on these? It's pointless if they don't trigger record when they have to. Cheers mate. Cheers Caveman Mark Off grid eastern Melb |

The motion detect looks similar to the UL_Tech (judging by the picture) and likely have similar settings, the Ul Tech I had to run them with detection set to medium because they were getting triggered too easily, the digital ones should be a bit more refined, I would expect. Also should be able to block out areas with tree branches that move, I have 3 of the Wired model UL-Tech cameras out in the weather for years clamped to a fence post no issues with water, the only issue I had, twice a year the sunlight lined up with the cameras and blinded the little buggers for the rest of the day, the only fix was to reset the system or unplug the power to that camera and the plug in again. The motion detection, I have it set for 10 seconds, if something is still moving at the 10 second time frame it will continue recording another 10 and so on until no movement is detected. ATM Movement detection can be activated from 12 times a night to a few 100, some times continuous if some spiderweb is across the camera, that can be a lot of recording to check. I have no idea about Swann. Cheers Aaron Off The Grid |
