Hi all After having all my equipment in a storage unit for 7 years, I am finally settled enough in our new home to take some time and check it all out. Everything was wrapped in plastic wrap with an old sock full of Bentonite Kitty Litter to keep the moisture at bay. Mouse /Cockroach baits all around the the storage unit. Everything was perfect except for the above instrument. It had a huge mouse nest in it, remnants of mouse bait, but no dead mice. Luckily the internal wiring was not rubber insulated so nothing was damaged, except for the smell of course. I do have a broken capacitor that I can't identify. Don't know if the Minus sign before the number indicates it is polarized, but suspect that it is. So the question is, can I replace it with an electrolytic ? Haven't got a manual for this but will search for it. It worked very well before I packed it up. Regards Regards Hervey Bay Qld. |

It's hard to tell without a reference to scale, but it looks to be non-polarized (or bipolar, same thing) cap. This one would probably work just fine: https://www.ebay.com/itm/CBB60-D12-2uf-450-Volt-Handing-Round-Motor-Run-Capacitor/141712350333?hash=item20feb6dc7d:g:1bMAAOSwFNZWz3yB If your device can tolerate a bit less voltage, this might be a good one for you: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-NOS-Bipolar-Sprague-1uF-300VNP-Aluminum-Axial-Electrolytic-Capacitor-TVAN1560/133362295917?hash=item1f0d03246d:g:eY0AAOSwvGdbmbkb |

I suspect you are right about the minus sign especially as it does say 350VDC so getting the polarity right would have been important or you get a visit from Grogster's genie. Even so, generally capacitance is capacitance - you can usually go TO bipolar from electrolytic but not the other way around (barring special requirements). I would chuck a 1uF 400V X type (used in mains filters etc.) in there and see what happens. Can't hurt and they are cheap as... hth h |

Hi All Many thanks for the responses and links. Wow I didn't know capacitors could get that expensive. Spent the money and ordered a manual for it, so once that arrives the circuits should shed more light on the purpose. Regards Hervey Bay Qld. |
