I got two good sized stepper motors out of an old DLT drive I plan on using for some small-scale wind generators.

Troube is, they have 4 wires comming out. Now, one of them I can tell is some kind of common connection because it is 3 wires twisted together.

Now, I need to be able to charge a 12V battery with these things, but I'm not sure how much power they will generate. They are actually listed as 12V motors on the label on the side.

I took a volt-meter and put it on AC mode and ran it across 2 random wires and spun it by hand (which is not very fast at all) and I got 1.4 volts showing up.

Anyway, can somebody explain, or point me to a diagram as to how I would rectify this to DC?

Unfortunately, I had already looked at that page. It doesn't really cover the 4-wire setup (it mentions it, but barely) and so I am not 100% sure how to do it.

This post didn't make much sense to me initially, it does now (after reading your other story, with the extra information you gave, etc.): what you have is *not* a stepper motor. It's a 3-phase brushless DC permanent-magnet motor.

Rectifying the output is easy. If you leave it wired in star (ignore the star point in that case; don't connect it to anything) connect the three wires (call them R-S-T) to the rectifying diodes like this:

If you rewire the motor for delta, simply wire the 3 outcoming wires to the same points (RST) of the rectifier.

(check out the lower half of that page, 3-phase full-wave rectification)

yeah, I already got this solved once I realized it was not a stepper motor. I originally thought it was because it had 4 wires going to it.
