Hi Everyone, It's been many years since I had any involvement in the RE stuff. Sadly, I don't remember most of what I had learned about inverters and building them. Life takes us on some interesting journeys sometimes. Now I am trying to play catch up and get back to up to speed on inverters.

I have recently scrapped two UPS units made by APC. They both were APC-500 units. I want to take both of the 300 watt transformers and reconfigure them for 600 watts max at 120v from a 12v battery.

I have been looking at these inverter boards from China, but am nervous at buying something that may blow up for no apparent reason? I've been using one for several months everyday

I have a post call Little China inverter board that Tells All About It

I did do a few modifications to it

you will see that poida the Great walked me right through it

With the modifications I've done I run a little air conditioner lights fans power tools

I am more than impressed with it

I think the Transformer is 25 or 30 lb

it should say in the Old Post

I also used two 18000 uf capacitor and built up the traces

And did the modifications to the 002 board

Mine has been Bulletproof so far and I beat it to death on a daily basis

Mack off-grid designed a new pwm inverter and it looks pretty awesome you might want to look at that first

I am very excited about it

I will be building one of the Mack mosfet board inverter next

while I'm winding the Transformers and scrounging together all the parts for my warp speed inverter

Hi BenandAmber, I came across your little Chinese inverter board discussion. Very informative and confusing at the same time. I need to isolate just the parts by poida. I am a bit confused on why though we must hack up the ESG002 boards? They look pretty decent from the manual. Why must they be modified? Would they work as stock form?

Here is the same board wired up for a 600-700 watt inverter , but at 24vdc.
Ben is correct. It is a very tough little board.

Amber mailed me her transformer and I should get it tomorrow. While my plan is to include this as part of a 10kW Warpverter, for now I am thinking of using it to build a LF inverter.

Thanks to Ironmaiden/Robert taking interest in these LF boards, I'm also thinking of walking with him.

gadgetjack - thank you for the nice picture. If we break it down to components:

1. on the left you have the toroidal transformer
2. in the middle you have a choke
3. on the right you have the brains and control board. The ESG002 (which I call "brains") is standing up vertically alongside the heatsink
4. offscreen you have the power source

I. Is that correct?
II. If so, where does control board come from?
III. Can the control board be modified to input 120V DC?

LadyN, I think the main board came from either Ebay or Aliexpress. The ESG002 is available from both sites. Aliexpress has some other control boards too. Looks like there is a square wave board and possibly a modified sinewave controller board.

110v DC might be possible from some of the larger inverter boards. I think I've seen one on AliExpress listed for 96v DC systems.

1. yes that is correct.
2. Ebay
3. It is a stock board , you order for 12,24,48v input.
No modes to the EGS002 other than to make it 60HZ.

Thanks for the reply GadgetJack. One last question? Where did you source the choke coil?

I'm considering E-I core transformers from scrapped APC UPS units. Is a choke still required for iron cored E-I transformers?

I pulled the choke from an old Xantrex 1800 inverter that went belly up. They are pretty good inverters till they die, then it is a big mess. Lots of burnt parts.

"The Iron Maiden", Long time since I have seen that movie, would like to see it again, better than all the other repeats we keep getting ATM.
That steam traction engine has some interesting history to it, and still runs at steam fairs I believe.

If you are going to use an E-I type transformer for an inverter, you will still require a choke for low idle consumption and generally (from my last experiment) runs more efficient than without it under load.

Hi Revlac, Yes, The Iron Maiden is a really good movie. I think I saw it on TCM some years ago. More recently I discovered it's on Youtube these days.
