Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Folks,

My son, 8th grade, has expressed some interest in learning more about electronics. He's been working a lot with 3D printing, robotics (took a Lego Robotics class last summer)...and mentioned a friend now using Arduino - I think they've been collaborating on a remote controlled toy car.

I'm trying to help where I can, but my electronics experience is baseline and has been generally focused on a particular application(s). I was hoping to gather ideas here for things that you may have used, either learners kits, or learning simulation software. Thanks for any help. ~ks

Hi kitestrings I dont think this is the best forum for you. If you go back one level under electronics the next heading down is uP and micro-controller programming etc.
This Forum you posted on appears to be mainly focussed on specific home automation and power topics. If you post the same question on the other forum I am sure you will find what you need - they dabble in hardware and software more suited to to your son I think.

I am newish here so I hope I have guided you correctly.
If at first you dont succeed, I suggest you avoid sky diving....
Cheers Mike

I would suggest having a look at www.adafruit.com and www.sparkfun.com, they're both over in the states with you.

Adafruit in particular is great for beginners with lots of tutorials and project ideas and pretty much every product they sell has a step by step guide on how to hook it up and get it running.

The microcontroller forum here is not Arduino friendly in my experience. There is massive amounts of information on the net about Arduinos. Adafruit is good, lots of useful stuff on youtube too, just search Arduino beginner.
There are only 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don't.
