Forum Index : Electronics : F&P Smartdrive motor to drive a turntable

I have a 36 pole F&P Smartdrive motor with a copper stator and want to use it as a motor to power a turntable on a telescope mirror polishing machine. I need to run it at about the wash cycle speed down to about 15 RPM with reasonable torque and to use preferably a 240 volt power supply. Is there a controller available that is suitable for this application? Would I need to rewire the stator and/or use something like a 24 volt DC power supply? Keith |

Search for a BLDC driver as used in electric model aircraft, electric scooter/bicycles. Lots of them on Aliexpress and Ebay plus other places. If you are using a Stator with 0.6 mm windings they are designed to operate at over 300VDC so you will need to rewire. Keep in mind that at 15 RPM you may experience quite a bit of vibration if you are only going to use low RPM and require plenty of torque a reduction gearbox may be needed. A simpler and cheaper method to drive it may be with a cordless drill motor V-belt and pulleys if that will provide sufficient power. If you need a fixed speed you could use an optical sensor to pick up the speed and control the motor with PWM. There are only 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don't. |

I would suggest for that low a rpm rate, something along the lines of a wormdrive reduction motor might be better (windscreen wiper motor is the most common unit seen by the average person, but they are available in a wide range of shaft sizes, hp ratings etc) |

The idea of a direct drive at low rpm is what attracted me to the smartdrive motor as observed in the wash cycle. This would avoid having to use belts, pulleys, etc, and make the build easier. I have wondered though whether the vibration might be a bit much and have thought perhaps a soft coupling might help there. The wiring is 0.6 dia and 300dc is pretty high. Someone suggested that the washing machine computer/controller might be modified and used but I have no idea how that would work. I have looked at bldc drivers on Aliexpress but I have little idea of what specs I should look for. So if I continue on this route I would need help with specs and circuitry. Another idea is for me to use a mobility scooter bldc motor, gearbox and controller. These can be acquired locally also and come in a range of sizes. |

Four seconds for one revolution is very slow, I doubt if you could get anything direct drive to run smoothly at such a low speed. I am with Boppa, you need some pretty serious gearing at that speed, and then the motor itself could be a quite small. Try looking on e-bay for "geared motors 15 rpm" and see what turns up. Maybe a garage door opener motor and gearbox, something like that ? This is new and a bit spendy, but something secondhand but similar maybe ? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Hydromec-Size-30-Ratio-80-1-17-5-RPM-0-18kW-240-Volt-Geared-Motor-with-SOS/372087402164?hash =item56a2232eb4:g:AAgAAOSwDrNZS869 Cheers, Tony. |

Since he was talking about using a powersupply, I was thinking along the lines of something like this (eta or try the local wreckers for a windscreen wiper motor) 24 wiper motor sized A bit smaller Tiny Lense motor for 10m lense grinder??? Hold the lense still and rotate the earth around it instead... |

Damn Boppa, why did you have to post links to those motors. Head now pinging with all sorts of crap I could use them for and most of it no help to any one Mark |

You could also look for a stepper motor drive. I found one inside a junked A3 laminating machine on the kerbside. This motor has a gearbox attached and the rev's go from just about zero up. I used it to rotate an 11m long carbon fibre mast for automatic sanding, then painting. Keeping it rotating as the paint dried negated any runs . Klaus |

I am now looking for a controller suitable for a Smartdrive motor powering from 24v battery supply. I have been considering e-vehicle controllers that use the hall sensors but haven't been able to verify the required wattage. As said previously, I require low RPM and good torque. Here is an 800w controller: https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=SB_20181107175355&SearchText=controller+brushless+dc+24v+800w But is 800w too much or too little? I also don't know about the number of mosfets I should go for. Keith |
