Hello evreyone,

 My Name is jason taylor,i now live in bear river nova scotia canada and have moved here from the uk for an alternative lifestyle.

i discoverd this site by chance surfing the net looking for wind powered generators and have enjoyed reading the many posts listed.

i dont know the half of what you are all talking about,all i can say is that i am interested and would like to learn as much as i can!

i have managed to escape the 9 - 5 rat race in the uk,escape the trafic, pollution, miserable people and over chlorinated water.

Now i want to tackle the power company who charge me extortionate rates for power  that is generated free in the village that i live through a small hydropower plant. 

My plan now is to convert my house over to a self sustaining system using wind and wood as i have penty of both.

having completed the heating and hot water side of things with an outside wood furnace,and satisfied that all the wood i burn is grown localy, cheap and renewable.

I now want to concentrace on running the circulating pump,lights and anything else that i can with wind power. 

So here i am joining this forem, watching,learning, hoping to discuss some of my craqzy ideas and maybe meet like minded people.

Hi Jason.

Welcome to the board. Good to see you plan to get off the grid.

Building a windmill can be a lot of fun, but also frustrating. My first windmills were absolute disasters, but you learn as you go and before you know it you've built a working windmill.

Feel free to ask questions of the guys here, they are a good bunch.

Hi Jason,

I am Glad that you want to live a sustainble life. Perhaps I could help you with your quest for knowledge about wind power. I have designed and installed a dozen wind turbine systems. I am in Ontario, which is 1000 Km away but I will be happy to email you any information if you like. Are you planning on building your own windmill?

hello solar mike,

         Thank you for your kind offer.

i cant decide where to start.i like the idea of building one myself but like the idea of just buying somthing ready made that has been tried and tested.i have wasted lots of time and money in the past playing around and i want to get things right 1st time.

this week i have been looking at a bio deisel generator to act as my back up system.i will also need some kind of battery bank to store but again am lost as where to start.

                  any advise much apreciated jason.

I can help you. I need to know some details about your location, such as prevailing wind direction, Your indented location for the tower, The local hieght restriction if any, is the surronding area close to any large trees?

Are you planning to errect the windmill yourself? What level of investment are you prepared for? $1000/$5000/$10,000? 

If you are going use a biodiesel gen-set for backup, then I strongly suggest using a Xantrex 'DR series' inverter for your main source of AC power. This inverter has an automatic multi-stage high current battery charger built in. And when the diesel turns on the inverter will automatically start charging your battery bank. The instant your diesel generator shuts off the Inverter will convert your battery power into 120 AC power. The main inverter AC output connects to your load center (fuse box) and from there, supplies electricity to all of your electrical circuits in your house. At no time will you be in the dark.

This type of system will be the best for reliability and is well proven. It is also economical and simple. I can pre-assemble/wire the inverter and all other controls up to a 4' x 6' piece of plywood and ship it to you. The best batteries for your purpose are the ones shown in the picture. They are Surrette L-16's that are 460 Ah and they are made in Spinghill, Nova-Scotia http://www.surrette.com/home.htm
