I lay in bed in pain last week thinking about a way to develope a braking system for my Exmork . Now this is different to a controller .. It's a thingo that you,me can activate when you go away from home ,or when you see/know that a storm is about to wreck everything above the ground --been there-done that.lol. OK , first electrics ,,I'd like 48v ,, anybody with 48v small motor or motor driven actuator out there ,I'll buy. Ok, a device to activate a cam or maybe srew push rod ?? Can you see where I'm going with this ??? A device to be mounted 60 feet up on top of the gennie body to push/release a master cylinder pushrod .... Got all of that ,just need some help in ideas on the cam/ pushrod idea . Like , I switch the motor on ,it revolves and the cam turns applying pressure to the pushrod activating the hydraulic caliper that clamps against the disc.. How do I release it ? I've in my mind two micro wsitches that control the on/off motor ,,the when I reverse the switch the pushrod reverses ,because it has a return spring and the caliper release the pressure on the pads... What do you reckon,,, anyone witha small powerful 48vdc servo motor out there?? Anyone like to draw a cam for me I'm getting better , must be,, thinking all these bloody crazy projects ... Bruce, i struggle to see why you want to go to all that trouble. How will you send power to the motor through the slip rings for starters?? I went through this same exersize with Phill some time back, who also looked at adding a manual mechanical braking system to his mills ........... Why?? Your mill has already a furling system, all you need to do is make it manual control, even Phill was suspect of doing this back then, but i talked him in to trying it, and now its a common practice in most of his mills, i even think Glenn has used it on his mill of late. Step back 100 years and look at what our fore fathers used to control water windmills, and is still used today to control them ........... manual furling. Phills solution was to drill a small hole through the centre of the slip ring to take a cable or cord that is attached to the tail furling, so the mill can be placed into a fully fuled position manually. Water mills use a manual slip ring where a plate ring is rasied or lowerd to push against a set of roller wheels on a cam to mechanically move the tail to a fully furl position, same result different method. Why place all that crap and extra weight up in the air that may be doomed to fail when you need it most, where a simple manual method will work just as well and far more reliable. Pete. OK Pete , The Exmork has a perfect straight passage ,small but unobstructed vertically down through the slip-ring assembly . I've done my homework on that. Control cable could be easily fed down throught this passage WITH a rotating swivel incorporated for either a stainless steel multicore pull wire to the ground OR a swivel connector for an electrical cable . Weight , bugger all , considering the Exmork head and other stuff weighs in at 40-50 KG, whats another 2 KG ? I'll take into account Phill's notation of the shear factor. Can't sleep ,, anyhow , this is a picture of the Exmork slip ring assembly while I was retrofitting it with brass and stainless steel hardware-the factory stuff was allready rusty during shipping!!. As you can see ,the brass slip-ring assembly is around 30-35mm dia, this is perfectly central ,of course. So, getting a cable ,steel or copper down inside there is no problem , just enclose it in a 8mm brass tube ,so the other cables don't rub on it. Bruce Bushboy |

Phill, thanks for that, the lever at the back looks like the cable attachment point?. Sort of pulls the internal disc pads onto the internal disc's ?. Is this part adaptable to my model ?. About the new model swinging tail boom ,,have you got any info/pic's on this new arrangement?. Thanks Bruce Bushboy |
