While cruising the net for some interesting news items, I came across this news article regarding a method of using wind power.
Looks like it might be up MacGyvver's alley with the pistons and such like.

Made that a link for you

Lost me as soon as I read "Bladeless Turbine Harvests Wind Energy 2.3X More Efficiently Than Bladed Turbines".

A good wind turbine is about 40% efficient. So that would make this new windmill 92% efficient! Betz law says we can only be 59% efficient at the most. Unfortunately like a lot of "ground breaking" windmill designs, they come up with ridiculous figures.

Also they say

"This turbine brings along a lot of innovations. It:
•Is half the cost of a typical wind turbine ( how did they work that out? )
•Is quieter than traditional models ( except for the infra-sound )
•Harnesses the power without hurting birds ( What about bees )
•Harvests about 80 percent of the available wind energy, which is 2.3 times more efficient than a traditional bladed turbine. ( rubbish )
•Reduces the amount of energy lost through poor aerodynamics and discards unnecessary structural elements such as the blades, hub and gear box. ( Oh come on! )
"

The idea is clever though. Be interesting to see some real figures, might have a place under water where a rotating turbine is a problem, like generating power from a dirty flowing water source.

The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now.

Quite a lot of energy is used to stop the piston and to make it move the other way.

Rotor spinning one way only is better method to harness more of the available energy.
