Hi Phillm
Just to let you know if you recall approx. 3 years ago about my modified Oil cool 500watt mill and still siting on the 13 metre pole has never came down for any maintenance or repair and still not one drop of oil leak Chinese 500 watts generator and did a lot of batteries charging 24 volt but not a lot of amps until last year and 3ph wires shorten out acting brake to previous from running without the load however earlier this year my daughter told me that windmill running screaming all day with two wire together instead 3 wire so l must have accidentally dislodge one of the cable when l removing the 12 x 220 amp deep cycle batteries the over the weekend anyway Oil cool mill had to dissipate the heat out of stator windings and no damage at all which l am very please with result I have notice that you drill hole to let the air might not good ideas because of wet weather so what is your suggestions? regard Ian

As I had said in a previous reply and I will copy and paste here and add a bit.

From that point which was very early days I did a lot more testing and further mods to get the 500W mills going very well . One point is that you CAN NOT short out these mills to stop them in high wind or as a matter 90% of mills say "NO" when they are going Max and with the power these blades develop the W/S is quite low .

I know you decided to go down the liquid cooling track , if you want to contact me about what the latest changes and mods are feel free, it was all around the furling dimensions and angles and I even added a manual furl option that is the way to go for positive shutdown. I have put this on all of my mills and to lock the tail in full furl and still let the mill run at a reduced output is a winner .

I am happy yours is going so well and you found that one of the phase wires was dislodged , you should be getting better Amps now .

As I have said , I DO NOT recommend direct shorting mills in strong wind apart from F&P mills which can handle it but will not stop. It is better to keep a load connected either by Batteries and dumping from there or having the mill feed directly into a resistor bank via a seperate rectifier .

I know Bob's 500w mill is still going strong as well and he did the Air cooled Mod as well , but also Bob is keen believer in NOT SHORTING the mill and preferes to just let the controls do their job . I think his may still be on a bit of a lean from a big blow . I do not really do the Air cooled mod any more, that was quite a few years ago .

Heres a picture of the manual furl mod for the 500w mills , this works VERY WELL for positive shut down or to leave running at 1/3 power..As I have said previously , if you want to contact me on the latest mods then please do.

Hi Phill
Thank as so far l am really happy with 500 watt mill as giving me no problem shorting mill in strong wind has been on since early last year never had any maintenance including the pole, wire cable and l use all stainless steel fitting including turnbuckle so look like will last long time anyway mill will have to come down soon to check for wear and tear to make sure everything is OK is part of safety issues
and what is latest mods you have and I know Bob living same shire council area from me and l will e-mail Bob soon also got some video taken on 500 watt mill testing on the lathe few years ago just before Murphy Creek's flood in 2011
