Curious as to what places and deals ppl have either seen or found for a battery bank purchase! I guess my budget is minimal so considering going secondhand. On first search direct to eBay, (but for want of a better avenue), these seem interesting x 10 at 140amphr deep cycle for around $1000. http://www.ecobatteryaustralia.com.au/ refurbish them! Not sure if the purple colour suggests Trogan? If it did it's more convincing since they claim to double a batteries life! Trogan last a long time and have a very good reputation. Anyone care to share any experience with them?.. thoughts or suggestions of other places and deals, what to buy etc, 2v, 6v, 12? My system is 12v and I think I have to stay that way since the wind turbine is 12v and will probably add some solar panels to the array sometime soon.My charge controller is adjustable to 12, 24, 48v's. Still if this power arrangement works it might run over to a granny flat some 30mtrs away from the shipping container where its all set up in, so may be worth discussing what system to use to "get it right". |

Ask around your local scrap metal people to see if you can get some telcom batteries from them. There are only 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary, and those who don't. |

Thanks for the tip. If I could get onto a bank of secondhand Telcom batteries that would be cool. I picked up four 6v ex Telecom Batteries from the rubbish dump for $2 each and they been going great but they seem few en far between here. Small country town pop 10000. I will ask around at the metal yard. I've seen a house running fully off some at 30 year old of very large 2v batteries connected to make 48v. He was working for Telecom at the time years ago. |

Great to hear that you can pick up batteries from dumps or Telecom. I checked up why I cannot buy Telstra batteries and it seems it is a policy of Telstra not to allow resale to the public. It is not a government env. regulation. A local scrap yard has pallets full of them and they all go to China and not to us enthusiasts. I have 2 of these in my shed running lights etc and they are not too bad. I bought more on impulse as they were cheap. Biggest problem was the freight, Dangerous Goods Surcharge and the weight killed it...could have bought new ones for the final cost. BUT, the one I received were are Trojan batteries (big raised stamp on the top), you are correct so that sort of made up for it. They state that they are only 80% but I believe they are better than that. If you were close enough to collect them they would be a great buy, in my honest opinion. It is a sucky rule that they have in place for these. Might find that in the country things are a little bit more relaxed and the "she'll be right mate" attitude applies sometimes if you are lucky. Sometimes we have a couple of Indian blokes driving around in a small truck, they come into the farm gate and ask if we have any old batteries that we want to throw away and pay us $10 each for them. I always have a sticky beak to see what they have on board and hopefully one day they may have some goodies I can get for $20 each. I have spoken to a few people out here and they also have a variety of people coming to collect batteries this way. Foolproof systems do not take into account the ingenuity of fools. |

I did not know they go to China. Telstra make billions off phone calls and internet etc they ought to recycle down a few batteries. I done know how they ended up at my local tip must of been pot luck. Some had a crack on the top which was nothing to repair with a bit of silicon! |
