Well its been a while, but I've finally got a windmill back up in the air. Nothing special, a 80 series stator wired as a 2X7C (http://www.thebackshed.com/Windmill/FPRewire.asp), connected across my 48 volt battery bank. When I first raised it I was getting 300 watts but the tower was bending a little too much, so I'll need to add some guy wires about half way up. Plus the ballance wasn't perfect and the turbine was a little noisey, so I adjusted the furling to cut in at 250 watts, and it runs much better with less tower bending. I added a cable to pull the tail into furl. This is something I've been nutting over in my head for a while, then last week Phill visited and showed me a couple of photos of a manual furl setup on one of his windmills, so I went for a similar set up. The cable runs down the middle of the tower and its easy to pull the tail into furl from the ground. Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Hey Glenn, Nice to see , it adds a feeling of being in control and having the ability to safely shut the mill down, even though F&Ps can basically be left to run through any howling gale because of the flux saturation, it is then dependent on all of the other components holding together. With the 500W kits that I have modified with manual furl even in 12m/s+ and fully furled they still make good power and not being out of control. As we all know , the old pumpers have been doing it this way for a 100+ Years , so why not .... Tried and tested .. because getting furling right is a black art . Also being able to hang a weight on the cable works like an auto shut down and takes the slack up each time the tail furls until approx 1/2 then pulls it into full furl , my weight was approx 5kg but this is all dependent on tail moment weight.
