I saw this in a tweet from Ben at gotwind.org, its a list of small commercially made wind turbines.

http://www.allsmallwindturbines.com/
"Welcome to the only website with all the world's small wind turbines!

At the moment we have 674 Small Wind Turbines from 234 manufacturers indexed:
•521 Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWT)
•152 Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT)
•and 1 kite
"

A lot of manufacturers there, and big variety of designs. One thing thats obvious is many of the lesser know brands and designs are massively over rated in power! Some of the turbines are less than 2 meters diameter but rated at over 1000watts! There was even a whirlybird fitted to a alternator and rated at 300 watts, a joke.

Unfortunately the average person with no understanding of the maths behind wind energy will fall for these power figures, spend their money, but be very disappointed when they find in real life the machine will make a fraction of its claimed power.

I think there needs to be a standard for rating a wind turbine. Any power figure must be accompanied with a wind speed, and a diameter ( and height if a VAWT ). Then its easy to see if the claimed watts rating makes sense, or is a rubbish figure by the seller to make a quick sale.

OK
This is a good writing, from the administrator, of these pages !

Many windgenerators are.. jokes !
I have tested 9 windgenerators during the years and
have seen numerous other working etc
My wife called most of them just; "the host's banner".
They had nothing to do with energy production.
Here in Finland windpower is the only option, to
make your own energy.
But, wind speeds are highest in the winter, when there is
Polar night and energy need is highest.
We have developed a simple, cheap and reliable warming controller,
to work in every place and to make just warm, for any source,
with windpower 2-50- kw..
No need for anykindof power source, batteries etc

There are places in the world, where they bring oil for warming,
in the winter, by air freight and they have very good wind conditions..

If you really want to make energy from wind, you must do your
"homework".
There has been many attemps to make such standarts, for small windpower.

You can get understanding, by reading;

http://www.wind-works.org/index.html

http://www.scoraigwind.com/

In these pages and several more, you can find test fields for
small wind power, to give real world readings etc

For my part, I want to say, that we live in what the strangest thing about time.
A century ago, we knew better, how to live in the natural context and how to take
all our energies, to live in there.

Now we have electronics gadgets, for every occasion..
We seek life from Mars..

Start your search, for intelligent life, from your yard
