This came up on one of my Twitter feeds, and I thought perhaps some of you guys here might like it too; http://hackaday.com/2012/02/09/make-a-wind-turbine-from-55-g allon-drums/ it looks pretty simple to make, and I would imagine it would catch a Lot of air and be able to drive something capable of charging more than just a cell phone ;) all the best ;) Hmm... seems to insert a space after G in Gallons for some reason, anyway, just remove it and the link should work. Edit. The forum inserts random spaces to break certain hacking scripts. This can also break long URL's. The button fixes it. http://hackaday.com/2012/02/09/make-a-wind-turbine-from-55-g allon-drums/ |

Thanks YT2095 for the links. I had this idea in mind and a 4:1 gear ratio, it looks about 1 rev/sec? |

The idea is fine, but as has been said, you need to place the drum halves on radial arms to get some much better efficiency out of it. Take a look at the construction of an ordinary cup anemometer to get the general idea. This will certainly slow down the rotational speed, but with a massive torque increase that will more than compensate. And with a larger diameter you can use more drums. Something like this perhaps. Cheers, Tony. |

Yt2095, I apologise to you on behalf of the forum members on the way you have been treated, I feel that Antero may have tried to make a point but his choice of words has been very poor. We have suffered indirectly, as a forum in the past due to a dispute he had on a Finnish forum 2 years ago. I for one was hoping that this was all in the past and he would welcome the opportunity to share some of his knowledge on larger chinese turbines. Please don't give up on us, this forum is about having fun and a sense of achievement in the art of doing it yourself and sharing it with others. More than half of the replies that I write, I delete before I post them because I struggle with getting the wording right. What I think is a witty offhanded remark someone else may read as offensive. regards Yahoo I'm confused, no wait... maybe I'm not... |

Hello yt2095, and everyone... Welcome to the forum, you did'nt expect the brassness did you. He's cut my posts on "Yawt, going in a big way", a few times as well. Everyone has their on take on things, hang in there with us. There is always time and appreciation for a different idea, at least with most of us here. Mac46 I'm just a farmer |
