govertical Thanks for all the links and videos therein. I particularly liked the last video showing 14 volts achieved at 38 to 45 rpm. My assumption would be to make the diameter of the alternator as large as possible to take advantage of a VAWT's ability as a drag machine, supplying raw horsepower instead of speed. It would also seem controlling a larger machine would be more desireable at lower rpm. I've built several VAWTs and each time swear I'll never build another, but we both know I will. In fact, I've already promised someone here I'd build one I built 40 some odd years ago that uses a flat sheet of Styrofoam as its single blade and works like a champ. Unfortunately, my passion is speed, so I prefer the Darius style machine. I may build one with controlling surfaces on the trailing edges of lifting blades and monkey around with a wind vane controlling each blade's angle of attack or maybe controlling that trailing edge. I believe when one does that, it's called a gyro-mill or something like that. . . . . . Mac Nothing difficult is ever easy! Govertical , I think it's a great project for these Uni students to help a small village get some power , but I do question their advice and direction they are giving with the materials they have chosen . The output of this VAWT is extreemly dismal for cost of materials( Cut-in @ 4 m/s , 40W @ 10 m/s ) . If the same materials were configured into a HAWT I would think the complexity of the basic engineering would be far less, and the Watt return on the material cost would be far greater than 40w@10m/s. Don't get me wrong , its a nice story, but in reality for a small village in Nicaragua wanting to run a couple of lights and charge their mobile phones a $100 worth of solar would be more benificial . Hi, I know there is a lot conflicting points view regarding HAWT and VAWT. I do not speak for the web site, I was just presenting the link. My point view is HAWT have a long proven history. Wind and solar work well together and if you can add a gasification ICE (internal combustion engine) to a system, even better. I chose to develop a VAWT because I view it as safe, less complex to fabricate, and will perform better for the wind conditions at my location. I do not see a down side using a free resource either way. just because your a GURU or forum administer does not mean your always correct :) |
