Interesting article kinda. Bergey just certified to the AWEA small turbine standard.

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/bergey-windpowers-10-kw-res idential-wind-turbine-becomes-the-first-certified-small-wind -turbine-in-america-2011-11-22

I'll be so happy when this is common and mandatory and the 'ebay roof mounted tiny vawt makes 5 kw' people go away.
Of course none of this hurts homebuilders. Just vendors. A boost to good ones, hopefully a nail in the coffin of the shady ones.

P.S. this comment is not geared to anyone here, just a general rant on the state of the small wind industry.

Yeah totaly agree Perry. All too often on ebay we see a windmill with the surface area of a fridge thats going to totally cut back your powerbill and pay for itself in months. Not possible, and no new scientific development or patent will change that.

This is a good honest move by Bergey and I hope their sales increase as a result.

Great news!

Bergy has backed the SWTC process and now they've gained something very valuable to show for it.

There is one downside for DIY wind turbines, but it's still in the future.
At some point, the people who pay subsidies for WT installations are all going to be insisting on certified WT's. Also a good thing.

The problem comes when the government permitting process people compare the fine print in the feed-in contracts. Then the eager beavers start copying the text into their laws and by-laws, making it illegal to install a DIY turbine because only certified WT's will get a permit.

I haven't heard this story yet, but I think it's within 5-10 years in the future. For now, people putting up a WT have to contend only with the tower issue, if it's an issue at all.

Sorry for the steaming pile of doom and gloom, in what's actually a good-news story.
