Hi there,

This is my first post here, so I'll spend a couple of words introducing me. I live in Australia, but as you can understand from my English I'm not Australian, yet...

I recently build a house on a 4 acres block in front of the ocean (Bass Strait), and I was wondering if was worth invest some money in a wind turbine, since the average wind in this area is reported to be 7.8 m/s.

Since we have several wind storms during the year, with very strong winds, I was wondering if products like Exmork are sturdy enough to resist, since it seems that some of you have this turbine.

Also, what other components do I need to connect the turbine to the grid? I'm struggling to have an idea of the total cost cost (pole, turbine, inverter and everything).

Well, I think it is more than enough for my first post...

IF you truly get 7.8m/s then it's a big solid HELL YES on a turbine.

I'd also say yes to the Exmork, as least to start with. Get what they call a 3kw turbine. Not particularly expensive and if it does fall apart well, it's only about $1000. Your other good chice would be a eoltec http://www.eoltec.com/

Welcome Ferro,

It sound like you definatly have the main resorce required for a wind generator , and I would also think at ceartain times you would have to much wind . What ever generator you are looking at it would need a positive lock down system to stop it in extreeme wind and be a quality unit , I dont think any Chinese built turbines would be able to with stand your conditions .

The eoltec that snowgost gave a link to has the brake option, but from looking at it I think you will need some serious coin 30K+ to get it in the air and grid connected.

The other good robust units are AWP http://www.africanwindpower.com/ .

Whatever you decide you need to be looking at survival in high wind, as mother nature wins hands down when it comes to cheap wind generators in your conditions and I don't know of any one who likes thwowing $1000 away every time the wind gets over 20m/s.

Thank you everybody, I understand the Exmork are cheap unit, but at least here in Australia nothing close to the $1.000 indicated by SnowGhost: the 3kw is listed at AUD3.390 and I think the cost of a pole and an inverter will add big money to the total sum.

Of course the survived wind speed worries me, the Exmark indicate 50 m/s but it seems some of you suggest me that this could not be really truthful.

The African Wind Power website seems to be offline, I'll check later, and Eoltec smaller turbine at 6 kw seems to big to start with.

I'll spend more time reading old posts, I'd really like to be able to use all that wind but at the same time I don't want (and I can't...) waste money.

brucedownunder, amazing pictures in your gallery, I really envy your ability to do things yourself. I find interesting the tracking system for solar panels, too.

I was also wondering if wind turbines suffer from salt: I live on the ocean and of course I have serious corrosion problems due to the rust.

You're right. I was quoteing from memory, and it was faulty.

My current exmork price list shows a 3kw with controller and 9 meter tower at $1855US plus shipping (And shipping from china will be about $300). Don't forget GST & duty.

I assume you're looking at http://www.sustainability.vic.gov.au/www/html/2123-wind-map. asp for the wind speed. Be aware that, that site is measuring the wind speed at 65 meters altitude. So at a height you can afford you're probably looking at 6 m/s (Which is still a very good resource)
