The tree Top Wind Mill using the UK Smart Drive is ready for its up close with Hurricane Irene it is three days out. Winds have hit 40 MPH all day here the turbine is working great. The Hurricane will pass dead center over it they allways do.
Here is a YouTube of it

I will roll the dice I am going to let it run with out the brake on for the storm.

My wings have seen 60+MPH winds from our North Easters winter storms.

I will keep you posted of the out come.

Noooo! It will be destroyed!

Wouldn't it be better to tie it down, and then have it producing power after the storm has passed. Its most likely the storm will destroy it, and then you'll have to start again, plus you'll have the tower owners upset at all the paint scraped off their tower when your windmill exploded.

Just my opinion. Whenever I had a cyclone in the area I would tie down all windmills, I figured I might need them after the storm to make power or pump water.

I agree with Glenn , Bob . Don't try and be a hero , get up there and secure it very well. Then next week all you have to do is untie the ropes and you are back in business..

BEEN THERE DONE THAT ...

I'm glad its still working Bob. Looks like its only a mild storm, very lucky for those in its path.

Found this, comparison of the recent big storms. Irene was weak but the widest by far. Looks like Yasi and Katrina were very similar. The death toll was interesting, we only had one for Yasi, but that was stupidity I have to say, running a generator in a closed room with you in it is not very smart. I think Australia has a different approach to these storms than the USA, and maybe thats got something to do with the death toll difference.

The Youtube video is good Bob, the turbines really going well up on that tower!

I'm not knocking your windmill Bob, far from it. The fact is survived 80MPH winds is testament to the build quality, you've done a fantastic job.

The storm was mild compared to Yasi or Katrina. 140kmh winds are not much, enough to knock over a few trees or a loose roof. Katrina had 280kmh winds, twice the wind speed, but 4 times the power. The shear diameter of Irene is amazing. Like a lot of people I find it hard to understand the death toll, but I was watching the News last night and they said one of the problems is that area of the east coast very rarely see any winds that high, and thats why there is loss of life. Many deaths were caused by tree's falling on houses. The trees have never had to deal with 140kmh winds before.

I came from the tropical part of Australia, where cyclones are a common event. The trees grow to survive winds over 200kmh, and any tree that cant was blown over before it got too big. I have a photo I took 3 months after cyclone Larry went through, 250kmh winds, most trees stayed upright, but all their leaves and branches were torn off. They have evolved to survive in that part of the country.

Hi Bob

Good to hear you and the mill survived the storm, wind speed was low compared to some we get here but still a terrific job to survive and produce power all the way. Sometimes it is what is flying free in the wind that does do the damage, bits of roofs and tree branches so you where lucky. I look forward to some data when you are back on line properly,

All the best

Bob

Yes Bob I think you can say your current design is now proven! 80mph is much more than most wind turbines could handle, especially for the many hours it would have been under those conditions.

When you get a chance ( and life gets back to normal ), let us know if there was any wear or damage to the turbine. Check for any signs of overheating of the coils too, though I think you'll find they will be OK.
