hi meso it might depend more on the type of alt your thinking about ... if its an axial ,it might be to do with the design you want to follow ...hughs uses blocks....i think otherpower use both...and small rounds seem to be used a lot on motor conversions you do see the debate coming up from time to time ....mainly from people who want to examine optimum coil shape to magnet ...things like sine wave, ultimate effency etc...at least thats what i read.... but in reality block shapes seem to be just as acceptable as rounds ......and because they are maybe more in demand they can be a little better value for money.. there should be some good ebay suppliers in the states ...just apply the usual rules when thinking about buying.... at the moment its not a great time to buy neo magnets ....prices have gone into alice in wonderland terrority....it might calm down a bit later niall |

Yeah I agree with naill1. It depends on the layout of the alternator and your budget. Your alternator might need a magnet 1.5 inches wide, and the closest sized magnet happened to be a rectangle, or a circle, but the rectangle one is 30% cheaper, sort of thing. At the end of the day let cost, size and flux determine the shape. I'm building a alternator now that would suit long rectangular magnets, but I found some round ones that were cheaper and had a lot more flux, so I bought those instead and put two side by side to give me the longer magnet shape. I dont think shape is that important. Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |
