Hello there, I am looking at getting my wind tubine connected to the grid. Probably a Windy Boy inverter and some DIY dump load/charge controller/overvoltage protection etc I wish to save money. I am hoping I can make the dump load/charge controller myself, probably a variation of this http://members.rennlist.org/warren/dumpload.html. Hi Darcy It depends on the voltages you are paying with. For 12v and 24v I'm pretty sure you can do as you like, as its not a lethal voltge. Its like wiring up the spotlights on the car, anyone can do it. Mind you, if you short something out and burn down the neighbours house, you'll still be in trouble. 48volts and up I think there are some regulations on what you can and cant do without some sort of qualification or training. Maybe someone else could shed some light on the subject. A lot of it also comes down to common sense. Play it safe with anything electrical. Hello, Why would you need a dump load and charge controller if you are thinking of grid connecting. Those are for battery maintenance. Think about it, why waste the energy as heat in a dump load when you are set up to sell it back for money? Perry |

If it is necessary to disconnect the AC side of the inverter eg for maintenance on the lines then it is neccessary to provide a dump load so the mill does not spin out of control. If My turbine is producing more power than my inverter can supply to the grid then the dc volts will rise. I will need to switch in the dump load to slow the Mill. Thankyou. Hi Darcy, Just a thought,the compliance of the installation is probably going to be inspected more so than the components.Even on a commercial level occassional duds are distributed and require recall/replacement.Where someone is considering making their own controller ect. they would have a level of comprehension and competence needed to evaluate the project.That is unless they are a total "Jock" in which case they'll unforunately get into trouble before to long.Cheers Rastus see Rastus graduate advise generously |

Perry he's right, I have two independent dump loads ontop of the grid connection one breaks, batt volts rise again 2nd dump load kicks in. Even more critical without batts to stabilise things. Luck favours the well prepared |
