Hi all, Im new to the game and would just like a few tips. Firstly i just got my hands on an old Fisher and Paykel smartdrive washing machine and removed the stator, and bits i need. My first problem was the shaft just didn't want to come out without force, so i had to use my trusty hammer. Problem here is im hot to sure if i damaged the shaft, and if i can get the cover to screw on far enough now. How low are these supposed to sit? I can see about 8mm of magnet (from stator when cover is on). Secondly when i set it all up in a vice and gave it a spin it makes a grinding noise like the magnets are rubbing, and there is a fare bit of resistance, is this normal? I also gave it a spin with the drill and i only seem to be getting 95 volts (haven't re wired it yet)I had a bit of a look on the net and most people seen to get a greater reading when doing this. my drill was flat out.. Anyway thats me for now, appreciate you reading and any advice would be great Cheers |

How have you got it set up ?? a picture would be good. Do some reading and keep your pinkies away from the 95 volts ! A brave man may not live for long, but a careful man does not live at all. |

Hi Shift540 One of our forum members Ross put together a page showing the correct way to pull apart a F&P Smartdrive. http://www.thebackshed.com/windmill/FPdiss.asp. It sounds like you have bent the shaft, they should come our easily with a little tap. There should be no grinding noise, or binding, and the magnet hub should fill over the stator with no stator poles showing. Have a look and see whats bend/broke. You might be able to fix, or find another. Watch out for the AC volts when you spin with a drill, or even by hand. A F&P Smartdrive can easily kill you if your not careful, as Poss pointed out. Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

If shift540 was driving the shaft out by hitting it on the threaded motor end, then he could have bent the threaded shaft. It could also be that he is now trying to fit the motor to the agitator end of the shaft. Also, did you remove the bearing housing from the washing machine drum? Comes in handy to mount the motor too. |

Hi Shift 540. I just got my f and p and found the same thing. I had no resistance in extracting it from the washing machine. I think you are probably just feeling the cogging. I must admit that even with the magnet drum removed there is some mild resistance with just the bearing and the rubber washer at the other end. I removed the little retaining spring over the rubber which helped a little and oiled it. I have a treadmill turbine which spins with much less resistance but can't make much power The inherent resistance in spinning these F and Ps to me seems quite high and I reckon you need lots of tourque in light winds to get these going. I will certainly try decogging before setting it up. $@#&*....the word often heard in my shed when it doesn't go to plan! |
