Hi all mill is finaly up
Tilt tower is working well, very easy to lift up and down.
i had trouble with it starting but after increasing the angle of the wings, of it went.biger wings with a bit more torque built into the design will make a big improvment.
I had very gusty winds during the afternoon and it spent a lot of time stoping and starting. I have taken the counter weights of the blades which should keep the speed down in strong winds untill i get a load on it.And know i am thinking i may not need to put them back on as a load should keep the centrifical force below the wind strenth and keep the blades working.
Running a 80 series stator 1x14c my voltage output was mostly around 20v with it going up to 35v at times. I think if i kept the stator as it is the cut in would be to low but to go for a 2x7c would have only given me 10v for most of the afternoon. So i am wondering if ther as enough of a difference between a 60 series and a 100 series to make it worth testing these as i could proberly pick them up for next to nothing.

I think i will stick to the 2 element set up. I think with a bigger set af blades and with a bit more torque built in should be a big improvement. but at the moment I should make enough power to charge a 12 Volt battery. And i think i should run these wings for a while to reveal the weaknesses before i build a new set.

All the best Dean

Hi Dean

Good to see it finally up in the air with a alternator on it. Now you can start some serious testing.

The 100 series are a rare beast these days. If you can find one, they would be worth trying.

Thats got to be a nicest looking meter box I've ever seen.

Thanks Glen

I have been busy over the last couple of weeks but in the next week i should be able to get to my frendly washing machine repair man, who last time i was there had a big pile of stators stacked up in the corner, so hopfully there is a 100 series there.

The last week we have had some roof rattling winds come through and the mill has held together no problem, as yet i have no load conected to it. The centrifical force on the piviting blades has acted as a good breaking system. Over the last week I have had regular peaks of 60 volts DC on the 1x14c 80 series. So it is looking good for bigger wings with less angle. When this happens i might have to do a rewire on the 80 series.

I have just about got a shunt regulator put together so i am looking forward to hooking up a battery and geting a proper load on it.

I spent a bit of time on the meter box as i thought the mill will proberly change over time but the meter box should stay the same, so worth the effort.

All the best Dean

Looking forward to seeing some KHWs soon.

Ps. Wondering if I should put(Jimbo)on my blades?

I have a spare 100 series stator I could part with.

Hi all
I have managed to pick up a 100 series stator and have had it up and running, but i was quite suprised by the output with it only producing around 6 volts while the 80 series in the same wind is producing around 20v. IT should be puting out a lot more amps and this is what I am after but i will need to get more revs out of the mill to make 12v regularly. Streamlining the rotor arms should help. i have been puting a bit of research into two element wings and i am planing to go with a cord width of the front element around twice that of the back one with a lot bigger camber in the front one. With increasing the hight of the wings this should give me the torque i need to run the wing angles at closer to right angles to the rotor arms which should give me more rpm, thats the theory anyway, But to start the new wing build i have been waiting for the original ones to break or show signs of weakness but so far they are hanging together the only deteriation has been the fading of the artwork. This is a long term progect so i am prepared to wait, especialy as i am tied up doing a few outher jobs but i cant wait to get working back on the mill again, in some ways I am hoping it breaks soon.

All the best Dean.
