I found some old Popular Science magazines in the bin a couple of years ago, the boss where I was working at the time was having a clean out and was throwing them away. I like reading old electronics and science magazines, just to see how things have changed, so grabbed them to read when I had a chance. These magazines were dated around 1980, about the time I was finishing up school, its a time that is still fresh in my memory. This article in the July 1982 edition might be of interest, so I scanned it in for the forum. Sorry if these pics took a while to load, or they are too wide for your screen, but its worth reading, some tips on building wind turbines to survive. 
Glenn I just moved the scans to PhotoBucket. Makes them load up faster and saves my bandwidth. PhotoBucket is a good idea, never used it before today  The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Hi Glenn It just shows that the potential has been there for years but at that time power was so cheap to make it impractical to install alternate energy devices, now as we pass into a new age of pay the full cost for our convenience it tis a different matter, As was mentioned on the forum several months ago that the cost will be the catalyst for improvement in efficiency and development of new ideas or the reviving of some of the =good old ones. Great find Gizmo! I can still see several of these units within an hour drive of my house. There was a grid tied Darrieus located on a major highway in my area for years. It seems that most of the surplus power it generated was used for startup on the next wind event. It is now in a cow pasture unseen by the public. An Enercon is still in its original location, but it has not turned in years. The Bergey 10 KW unit came out a little later than their 1000 watt machine (I think). Some of the original ones are still flying and generating power. They stand as a reminder of what will survive and last through the years. philb |
