Any you blokes got any information on the old Southern cross windmill tower footings.
I have been using a 40 foot SC tower for my 32 volt Dunlite wind generator for 25 years and it works just great. ( The trees around the farm are getting to tall )
I now wish to put up another 70 foot tower, that I have just finished constructing and need to know the footing size for the 3 legged foundations.
Cheers Windy

The original towers came with a wood sleeper cutoff about 400mm long that bolted onto the base of each leg and was burried about 2 foot deep.
Concrete was not used in the early days, and they always had a length of pipe down the bore full of water that also added weight and acted as a extra anchor.

Later mills use to have about a foot of 2" angle bolted to the leg bottom so they could be packed up to be plumb in a hole of approx 400mm square, and then filled with concrete, again the pipe full of water also helped to anchor the mills.

The splay of the legs on the tower do give a lot of support to its stability, as the footings work as counter levers within the ground.

Do what you think best suits your location and the height in relation to the width the legs are spaced apart at ground level.

Hope that helps.

Pete.

Hello there
my last tower I made was half as wide as it was high. It sits on the ground and is held to a tonne of concrete in the ground with four HT fence wires. If you double the size of the footprint you will halve the leverage on each foot. hope that helps
