Hi guys,
I telephoned F&P tech service in Cleveland Brisbane this morning and got some useful info on the new rotor hub.

It looks the same -but instead of the ceramic rectangular magnets imbedded in the sandwich, they have similar ,but long tapered magnets slightly angled .=No Cogging at all=   Young tech guy told me ,he's had one on a bench and it spins very easy.

Part No. 420 774 P around $80 Au can be ordered from your local service centre.
He dosen't expect these rotors or their machines to turn up in our tips for some years yet.

He also tells me that LG have a spin dryer out there with a similar motor to the F&P--anyone like to make some enquiries, please??

So, there you have it --- I have also e-mailed Michael Lawley at Ecoinnovation for any info he might tell us--

Oh, I forgot ---It's very quite ,noise wise compared to the old models --he told me.
This may be helpful to u's guys building VAWT's

Well done Bruce.

Do you know if its the same size, spline etc.

I might visit my local supplier and buy one, for that price you couldn't go wrong.

Hey Bruce

The local supplier had one in stock, so I went to have a look. It dosn't look any different, are you sure on that part number? This one had the same large square looking ceramic magnet, and was the white plastic type.

I didnt ( but should have ) test to see if the square ceramic had its four magnets strips at an angle or straight as normal. But to look at, its no different than a normal hub, there is no sign of a angled ceramic magnet.

I know L.G do use this motor and what models for sure I don't know. I did look around and didn't find any L.G in the dumps in Canada. Here is a old pic from L.G

Hello Guys. Yes, the rotor(new one) is exactly the same and fits exactly the same way --It looks the same also ,but maybe the while housing is the give away tell-tale that it's the new model .
Yes, the part No. is correct --he checked for me twice .
He also thought if you hole it up to the light you can see the magnet segments in the housing-the tapered shape, bur he's not sure of that.

I bought one.

They had one in for a warrenty repair on a March 2006 model machine, but didn't need it. I will test it this afternoon and post some pictures tonight.

I'll expect my Micky Mouse badge in the mail please.

OK, we have a problem.

I replaced the hub on the Lenz windmill with the new hub, and there was only the slightest hint of cogging. Yipee!

Then I went inside to measure the output, nothing! What the!

I took the hub back off, and counted the magnets. The olf hubs have 14 large ceramic blocks, each with 4 magnets, giving us 56 magnets. The new hub has 16 ceramic blocks, each with 3 magnets, giving us 48 magnets!

This means the new hubs are not compatible with the old stators.

But there is hope.

The new hub lines up with a stator pole every 7 poles ( where it was every 3 poles with a old hub ), so this means we need to rethink the way we rewire the stator. Instead of a 3 phase machine we end up with a 7 phase machine. What I need to do is find out how many poles on the stator that matches this new hub.

Brain hurts, will have a think later after I play ball with the dog.

Some photos.
From the back the hub looks identical, except there are 5 lumps, two shown with arrows.

And this is the difference in magnets. A magnet ( actually 4 magnets in one ceramic tile ) from an old hub is shown for comparison. You see the new ceramic tiles are shorter, and contain 3 magnets.

The old stators can be re-wired to suit, and it gives us a whole new combination of connections. I'll play around with these new connection options this weekend.

Hey Bruce, if you talk to your mate at the Cleveland F&P agent again, could you ask him how many poles are on the stator that suit this new hub?

Ahhhh, There's allways a catch, bugger. I'll see if I can call that tech guy again and chew his ear a bit more.
He didn't seem to mention the stator in my conversation with him,so I thought it was only the hub that was different---
wonder how much a new stator would cost??
Buttttttt,,,,,   maybe the new stator has a more even amount of poles and therefore it will be easier to re-configure and more options????
That LG stator looks like it has 36 poles ,so it will let us have more combinations to work with

was at the dump today and got another machine ,only 6 years old -I've got so many of these machines now that a few of them could have been re-built like new ,never mind.

What did the new hub cost , Glenn??.

The hub cost $60, pretty cheap. I started re-wiring a stator last night, every pole coil needs to be separated, so you end up with 84 wires ( 42 poles ), then every 7th pole connected in series. Using this 7 phase configuration, we now have 6 groups, which means we can re-wire as 6, 3, 2 and 1 ( the old setup was 14 groups, which gave us combinations of 14, 7, 2 and 1 ).

Its actually a lot easier to re-wire than I first thought, and I'm pretty excited about its potental. This will give us a cog-less F&P, with 4 different wiring combinations. I'll draw up some wiring diagrams this weekend. The only disadvantage so far is because we are using 7 phase power, you really need to mount the rectifier at the windmill top, running 7 wires down the mast would be a problem.

Dangnmation! It looks like F&P have already done what I was trying to describe a couple of nights ago!

Surely the new stator is wired for 7 phase already?

It works.

Wired up a stator for 7 phase, its a standard stator, 0.8mm wire, not decoged. Built a 7 phase bridge rectifier. Bolted it to the Lenz windmill. In a slight breeze I was getting 6 volts per phase, all phases equal. No noise, no cogging. Connected up the bridge and battery load, wind picked up a little and read half an amp into the battery.

I've connected up the PicLog and will record the watts over the day, but it looks like its a winner. A cogless F&P.

Its a series connection, so each leg of the phase has 6 poles in series. Later I'll re-wire it as a series parrallel, 3 of 2 in parallel. Then for the real test I'll take down the big HAWT and fit the new stator and hub.
